A finely bound and washed edition of the fables of Aesop a lovely copy complete with detailed engravings. Smartly rebound in a modern quarter calf binding with patterned cloth to the boards with renewed endpapers in a custom cloth chemise and cloth slipcase. An unsigned binding by Eric Sweet. Chemise and slipcase are both in a fine condition. Pages have been washed presenting an extraordinarily and uncommonly bright copy of this work.The London imprint is fictitious the work was printed in York.Engraved by E. Dyas with a frontispiece and one-hundred and ninety-six engravings one for each fable. Collated complete though with renewed endpapers.The fables of Aesop here translated and edited by Samuel Croxall.Aesop's Fables is a selection of fables generally attributed to the Ancient Greek storyteller Aesop who lived around 620 BCE-564 BCE. The fables are moral tales that guide in religious and secular aspects of life following adventure of many different creatures.Croxall was noted for this edition of 'Fables' for his easy colloquial style and their instructive applications a popular and oft-reprinted translation.Bound by Eric Sweet a keen collector of private press and fables. Internally firmly bound. c1788 and 1813 are age-toned with scattered spots 1824 is bright and clean with only a few scattered spots. Faded ink inscription to the title page of the 1824 edition. Repair to the title page of the 1813 edition lacking the frontispiece. Chemises are a little spotted in a very good condition.
