Bound in full cloth with the original wraps bound in. Volume I and II only. Published in three volumes. Written by French military author Emile Driant who wrote under the pseudonym Capitaine Danrit. Driant also held positions as a high-ranking army officer and politician ultimately meeting his untimely end as the first official casualty at the Battle of Verdun during the First World War.La Guerre Fatale surrounds a conquest of the United Kingdom by France depicting a crumbling British defence powerless against the ferocious and heroic French advances. Published in three volumes the first part 'A Bizerte' the second 'En Sous-Marin' and the third 'En Angleterre'.Illustrated throughout by Leon Couturier. With stamps from Cercle de L'Union Artistique Bibliotheque and a bookseller label from Reliure Franz. Bound in full cloth with the original wraps bound in. Externally generally smart with bumping to the extremities and slight rubbing causing small tears to the cloth. Cloth is discoloured with marks to boards and darkening to spine. Library location labels to spines. Bookseller label to front paste down. Internally firmly bound Pages are age toned and rather delicate due to paper type used. First edition early printing of this remarkable submarine adventure relating the story of a 200 ton submarine and sailors trapped below the sea thirty fathoms below the Mediterranean off of the coast of North Africa. Driant 1855-1916 was a noted suspense/thriller writer French Army officer and politician who wrote under the pseudonym of Capitaine Danrit and published more military science fiction before World War I than any other writer. He used this work to push for increasing more safety measures and better procedures for submarines in the French Navy. It was first published in English in 1910 in a translation by Frederick Lawton. He was the first high-ranking casualty of the Battle of Verdun during World War I as he rallied his two battalions of 1200 men in a desperate defense of the Bois de Caures in Flabas buying time for the French High Command to rush troops and weapons into the threatened sector.
