Fine print some minor dark spots. Forgotten by the history of photography Truchelut was one of its pioneers. He was one of Daguerre's 15 preparators and filed several patents related to photography including the panotype which allowed obtaining a photograph on fabric. He developed this process by offering to create paintings based on carte-de-visite photographs for his public. In 1880 Truchelut partnered with his son-in-law Valkman and the cards would henceforth bear both their names which is why this photograph was taken between 1871 when Truchelut resumed the Photographie universelle and 1880. While most studios went bankrupt after the Commune Truchelut was one of the few to continue prospering. Truchelut unknown

Verne was born to bourgeois parents in the seaport of Nantes where he was trained to follow in his father's footsteps as a lawyer but quit the profession early in life to write for magazines and the stage. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the <em>Voyages Extraordinaires</em> a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including <em>Journey to the Center of the Earth</em> <em>Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea</em> and <em>Around the World in Eighty Days</em>. The head of the Cascabel household had to start this perilous voyage after the money intended to pay the tickets of the boat which was to take them along to France from New York was stolen by thieves. So Caesar crosses initially the vast forests of Canada. At the border of Alaska they save the life of Mr Jean a banished Russian aristocrat who had been just attacked by outlaws. They also make the acquaintance on this occasion of Kayette a young Indian woman who had also dashed for the noble Russian. After having waited a few weeks that the Strait of Behring freezes all the family finally thrusts upon the sea of ice but in the medium of the crossing the temperature of the air increases dangerously and the ice is parceled out. The caravan of the Cascabels is detached soon from the ice-barrier on an iceberg and our heroes start to drift across the Arctic Ocean. When the Cascabels finally manage to reach the northern coast of Siberia they are made prisoners by a local tribe who requires from them a ransom for their release that they cannot obviously provide. Next spring Cesar Cascabel by using its gift of ventriloquy frightens the chief of the tribe and manages to obtain his release. The Cascabel company meanwhile increased its numbers with two Russian sailors who were also prisoners. These sailors are in fact the two brigands who had attacked Mr Jean in the Canadian forest. They now envisage to rob Cascabel with the assistance of accomplices when the company is crossing the chain of the Ural. Evans XXXII 95: 105–141 First American editions.</p><p><em>The Giant Raft</em> is an adventure novel involving how Joam Garral a ranch owner living near the Peruvian-Brazilian border on the Amazon River is forced to travel downstream when his past catches up with him. Most of the novel is situated on a large jangada that is used by Garral and his family to float to Belém at the river's mouth. Many aspects of the raft scenery and journey are described in detail. Joam Garral grants his daughter's wish to travel to Belém where she wants to marry Manuel Valdez in the presence of Manuel's invalid mother. The Garrals travel down the Amazon River using a giant timber raft. At Belém Joam plans to restore his good name as he is still wanted in Brazil for a crime he did not perpetrate. A scoundrel named Torres offers Joam absolute proof of Joam's innocence but the price that Torres wants for this information is to marry Joam's daughter which is inconceivable to Joam. The proof lies in an encrypted letter that will exonerate Garral. The original edition published by Hetzel contains a number of illustrations by Jules Férat. The novel is a crossover sequel to Verne's famous <em>Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas</em> 1870 and <em>In Search of the Castaways </em>1867–68 though its themes are vastly different from those books. An early draft of the novel initially rejected by Verne's publisher and wholly reconceived before publication was titled <em>Shipwrecked Family: Marooned with Uncle Robinson</em> seen as indicating the influence of the novels <em>Robinson Crusoe </em>and <em>The Swiss Family Robinson</em>. Verne developed a similar theme in his later novel <em>Godfrey Morgan</em> French: <em>L'École des Robinsons</em> 1882 The chronology of<em> The Mysterious Island</em> is completely incompatible with that of the original <em>Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea</em> whose plot begins in 1866 while <em>The Mysterious Island</em> begins during the American Civil War yet is supposed to happen some years after "<em>Twenty Thousand Leagues</em>".<br /><br />In the United States the first English printing began in Scribner's Monthly April 1874 as a serial. In September 1875 Sampson Low Marston Low and Searle published the first British edition of <em>Mysterious Island </em>in three volumes entitled <em>Dropped from the Clouds</em> <em>The Abandoned</em> and <em>The Secret of the Island </em>195000 words. In November 1875 Scribner's published the American edition of these volumes from the English plates of Sampson Low. The purported translator W. H. G. Kingston was a famous author of boys' adventure and sailing stories who had fallen on hard times in the 1870s due to business failures and so he hired out to Sampson Low as the translator for these volumes. However it is now known that the translator of <em>Mysterious Island</em> and his other Verne novels was actually his wife Agnes Kinloch Kingston who had studied on the continent in her youth. The Kingston translation changes the names of the hero from "Smith" to "Harding"; "Smith" is a very common name in the UK and would have been associated at that time with the lower classes. In addition many technical passages were abridged or omitted and the anti-imperialist sentiments of the dying Captain Nemo were purged so as not to offend English readers. This became the standard translation for more than a century. In 1876 the Stephen W. White translation 175000 words appeared first in the columns of <em>The Evening Telegraph of Philadelphia</em> and subsequently as an <em>Evening Telegraph</em> Reprint Book. This translation is more faithful to the original story and restores the death scene of Captain Nemo but there is still condensation and omission of some sections such as Verne's description of how a sawmill works. In the 20th century two more abridged translations appeared: the Fitzroy Edition Associated Booksellers 1959 abridged by I. O.
