This specific edition is not called out by Taves and Michaluk in their long list of reprints although Westbrook is noted as one of many reprints issued during the 1900 period. Estoclet preceding the London edition. Though the cloth color is at variance from that described by Myers for the first printing the plates are printed on one side only and there are no ads as per the first printing. Inner hinges cracking slightly circulating library plate on pastedown a number of marginal discolorations in the early portion of the text and on the front free endsheet; thus just a good copy but externally bright and fresh. Original brown cloth decorated in gilt and black. First Combined Edition. On the very same day that Scribner Armstrong published the authorized American edition of MERIDIANA May 23 1874 Shepard of Boston came out with a pirated edition; Shepard did the same with the earlier A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH. To combat the cheaper Shepard books Scribner Armstrong came out with this combined volume on July 4th just six weeks later. It borrows the binding from the original Scribner Welford & Armstrong issue of the English MERIDIANA includes a separate title page and other preliminary leaves for each tale and combines all 48 MERIDIANA illustrations with just 20 of them from the other title. The first page of the ad catalogue is a "Caution" against buying these titles by any other publisher which "are PIRATED and cannot fail to be inferior in every particular". This is a very good copy with discreet repairs at the spine ends but quite attractive on the shelf. On the endpaper and title page is the penciled signature of Charles. Harvey. Scribner of Toledo Ohio -- a judge whose son invented the multiple switchboard and who may or may not be related to this book's publisher. See Taves & Michaluk V009. unknown books

Shepard's edition was preceded by the authorized 1873 Scribner Welford & Armstrong edition titled MERIDIANA: THE ADVENTURES OF THREE ENGLISHMEN AND THREE RUSSIANS IN SOUTH AFRICA . an edition made up from the sheets of the British edition published by Sampson Low in late 1872 but dated 1873 on the title page. Shepard's pirated edition was published the same day as Scribner's authorized new edition of MERIDIANA their first edition to be printed in America. First American Edition and first edition in English. The tales in this collection in addition to "Doctor Ox's Experiment" are "Master Zacharius" "A Drama in the Air" "A Winter in the Ice" and "The Fortieth French Ascension of Mont Blanc" this last item written by Jules's brother Paul. "Doctor Ox's Experiment" is a mad escapade of a scientist overloading a small town's atmosphere with oxygen to see if it will speed up the pace of life there to a virtual frenzy. This edition was published in late June or early July 1874 the same year as the original French. This copy is in green moiré cloth; others are in terra-cotta blue or plain green cloth no priority. 189193641891. A Tale of the American Civil War. With Numerous Illustrations. New and Cheaper Edition. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1891. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black. Early English "New and Cheaper" Edition of this adventure tale taking place during the American Civil War. This is the tale of the antagonism between Burbank an anti-slavery Northerner now living near Jacksonville Florida and Texar a pro-slavery Southerner; Texar winds up kidnapping Burbank's daughter and hiding her in the Everglades and Burbank heads off in search of his daughter -- all as the Civil War rages around them. The first English edition came out in December 1887 though dated 1888. Sampson Low would always issue a "New and Cheaper Edition" two or three years later in a similar but slightly smaller binding but with the same crisp illustrations. This copy is very good recased in its original binding with the original pale yellow endpapers which are reinforced at the joint. The front free endpaper bears the inkstamp of the original owner and its verso bears an 1893 gift inscription to him. This is a Verne title that we seldom see. "DICK SANDS: THE BOY CAPTAIN is a classic children's novel with a strong plot and plenty of action. Some of its descriptive passages are excellent and many of them are instructive. Apparently the only edition with English translation by A. L. Alger. This edition mostly likely unauthorized may have preceded the "authorized" 1874 Osgood edition published as DR. OX'S EXPERIMENT AND OTHER STORIES. The Gill edition was advertised as "now ready" on 11 July 1874. The Osgood edition with contents translated by George M. Prior to publishing this edition Scribner Welford & Armstrong imported sheets of the British 1872 Sampson Low edition title page dated 1873 printed by Gilbert and Rivington and bound in England by Burn & Co. with a cancel title leaf mounted on a stub this issue was perhaps prepared quickly to precede or compete with the Shepard's unauthorized edition. The Scribner Armstrong edition is dated 1875 on the title page but the book was issued in late October 1874. It was copyrighted 26 October 1874 and Scribner Armstrong filed two deposit copies on 31 October 1874. WRECKED IN THE AIR the first of three parts of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND was issued simultaneously in cloth and in pictorial wrappers the latter binding state now rarely encountered. WRECKED IN THE AIR the only part of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND issued by Scribner Armstrong in a two-column format perhaps utilizing the plates of the SCRIBNER'S MONTHLY MAGAZINE printing was rushed into print to compete with the 1874 Shepard piracy.
