Count Dakkar Lionel Barrymore the benevolent scientist-leader of a volcanic island is attacked by the evil despot Baron Falon Montagu Love leading to a submarine chase in which they discover a race of water-bound humanoids. <br/><br/>Fraught with a difficult production the film began shooting in 1926 but due to various problems it would take three more years before its 1929 release. Lauded as an impressive cinematic feat the astronomical price tag over $1 million in 1929 all but guaranteed the film would be a financial disaster at the box office turning studios off science fiction for many years. <br/><br/>"The Mysterious Island" was at the forefront of multiple technological advances a part-talkie film shot entirely in Technicolor. All color copies were believed lost but in 2013 one existing color print was discovered in Prague and has since been restored through a collaboration between US film experts and the Czech National Film Archive. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. This is a tale of a meteor's close brush with Earth with the main events taking place in Virginia. The story had first appeared in a French daily journal in March-April 1908 -- three years after Verne's death. Despite the date 1909 on the title verso this book was actually published in November 1908. Though sited in America the book was not published in the United States. This is a handsome volume with one of the 24 Roux plates reproduced upon the decorative front cover. Breuer M.D. made his debut in Amazing Stories with "The Man with the Strange Head" a story about a man who extends his life and strength by creating a mechanical body paving the way for Ironman and his suit. And to top the year off editor and founder Hugo Gernsback published "The Fate of the Poseidonia" by Claire Winger Harris the first female author published in a Science Fiction magazine and the first such story where a heroine not a hero saves the world. Walt Disney's "20000 Leagues Under the Sea" was one of the most expensive and ambitious productions of its time. A 200 foot submarine a 225 pound diving suit a specially built soundstage with a 90 x 165 foot tank and a giant squid which weighed two tons and required a crew of 28 to operate were just some of the monumental challenges of the production. Disney's first CinemaScope motion picture "20000 Leagues Under the Sea" was a resounding success and went on to be considered one of greatest live-action adventure movies ever made.<br/><br/>In 1868 off the coast of San Francisco Professor Aronnax Paul Lukas his assistant Conseil Peter Lorre and master harpooner Ned Land Kirk Douglas set sail upon a armed frigate to investigate a spate of sinkings rumored to be caused by a sea monster. After months of searching the "monster" is spotted sinking a merchant vessel and the frigate attacks only to be sunk themselves. Adrift in the ocean the three come upon a strange metal vessel and realize the "monster" is a "submerging boat."
