A non-contiguous assemblage of material from Sartain's Union Magazine and Godey's Lady's Book from 1851 and 1852. The volume missing the front board would benefit from being disassembled and rebound in it's component parts - half title pages are mis-matched engravings are found in odd places etc. We have not collated this volume and cannot guarantee completeness of the other articles engravings etc other than to note that the Verne and Thoreau articles noted in this description are present and complete and that the issue title pages are also present hence the pricing at well below "market values". There are numerous other interesting items in this assemblage including an early poem with color plate Godey engravings etc etc. Disbound. Contains 2 literary giants in original publications before they were well known - Jules Verne and Henry David Thoreau. The Verne piece "A Voyage in a Balloon" was translated from the French by Anne T. Wilbur. Taves and Michaluk V012 p 143 note that "This was apparently the first time Verne ever appeared in English . The assemblage also contains "The Iron Horse" and "A Poet Buying a Farm" both by Thoreau. These articles are notable for being early contributions to Thoreau's famous work "Walden Or Life in the Woods" published in 1854 which detailed his personal experiences and reflections near Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts. They observe strange discrepancies between the natural laws of Earth and those that apply to their surroundings struggle among one another to establish power and ultimately decide to work together to escape the comet. Originally published in French in 1877 as Les Voyages Extraordinaires: Hector Servadac Voyages et Aventures a Travers Le Monde Solaire this American edition was printed in New York the following year. First American edition preceding the English edition.<br /><br />Jules Gabriel Verne was a French novelist poet and playwright best known for his adventure novels and his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction. Verne was born to bourgeois parents in the seaport of Nantes where he was trained to follow in his father's footsteps as a lawyer but quit the profession early in life to write for magazines and the stage. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages Extraordinaires a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days. Verne is generally considered a major literary author in France and most of Europe where he has had a wide influence on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. His reputation is markedly different in Anglophone regions where he has often been labeled a writer of genre fiction or children's books not least because of the highly abridged and altered translations in which his novels are often reprinted. Verne has been the second most-translated author in the world since 1979 between the English-language writers Agatha Christie and William Shakespeare and probably was the most-translated during the 1960s and 1970s. He is one of the authors sometimes called "The Father of Science Fiction" as are H. G. Gallagher Mistichelli and Van Erde A 50 First British edition.<br /><br />Eight Hundred Leagues on the Amazon French: La Jangada - Huit Cents lieues sur l'Amazone is a novel by Jules Verne published in 1881. It has also been published as The Giant Raft. Unlike many of his other novels this story does not have any science fiction elements. It is an adventure novel. This novel involves how Joam Garral a ranch owner who lives near the Peruvian-Brazilian border on the Amazon River is forced to travel down-stream when his past catches up with him. Most of the novel is situated on a large jangada a Brazilian timber raft that is used by Garral and his family to float to Belém at the river's mouth. Many aspects of the raft scenery and journey are described in detail. Joam Garral grants his daughter's wish to travel to Belém where she wants to marry Manuel Valdez in the presence of Manuel's invalid mother. The Garrals travel down the Amazon River using a giant timber raft. At Belém Joam plans to restore his good name as he is still wanted in Brazil for a crime he did not perpetrate. A scoundrel named Torres offers Joam absolute proof of Joam's innocence but the price that Torres wants for this information is to marry Joam's daughter which is inconceivable to Joam. The proof lies in an encrypted letter that will exonerate Garral. When Torres is killed the Garral family must race to decode the letter before Joam is executed.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Recased occasional spotting spine dulled some occasional finger to pages corners gently bumped else a very good copy. 1874121571874. Translated from the French. London: Sampson Low Marston Low & Searle 1874. 40 pp ads dated August 1874. Original orange cloth decorated in black and gilt beveled all page edges gilt. First British Edition published in September 1874 -- the same month as Scribner Armstrong's American edition. This volume consists of two separate tales. The first is a fictionalized narrative of Verne's 1867 passage from Liverpool to New York aboard "The Great Eastern" the largest iron ship ever built and one of the wonders of its age. Her length was 692 feet her beam was 120 her paddlewheels and propeller were larger than anything the ocean had ever seen and she was designed to carry more passengers than the Queen Mary. Because of her size "The Great Eastern" was the only ship capable of laying the great Atlantic Cable. The second tale is fictional more in Verne's usual style: a Glasgow shipowner devises an adventurous plan to run the Union blockade of southern ports during the American Civil War in order to bring a load of cotton back to his city's 25000 idle looms. This copy is in orange cloth we have also had a dark red copy and a green one -- no priority. It is in bright near-fine condition spine slightly faded as usual with this color cloth occasional light foxing on the leaves within; the elaborate gilt design on the front cover remains bright and atypically the original peach endpapers are not cracked. First printing of Scribner Armstrong's "complete" edition published at $3.00 and released in late 1874 or early 1875. This undated 413-page edition with 55 full-page illustrations was preceded by a Scribner Armstrong edition with title page dated 1874 with 384 pages and 52 full-page illustrations a copy of this 1874 edition has been noted signed and dated 4 November 1873 by an early owner. This earlier version was offset from the plates of the British 1872 Sampson Low edition and was offered for sale at $2.00. It is probable that Scribner Armstrong rushed out this early version to compete with the unauthorized edition published in Boston by the Henry L. Shepard & Co. in 1874. Scribner Armstrong's "complete" edition has reset text with printer's imprints on title leaf verso reading "Jas. B. Rogers Co. / Printers and Stereotypers / Philadelphia" and "John F. Trow & Sons / Printers and Bookbinders / 205-213 East 12th St. / New York." Pages 415-420 are publishers' advertisements with a single Verne title FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON DIRECT IN 97 HOURS 20 MINUTES listed on page 420. The title page calls for 52 illustrations by Riou the spine panel for 53 but there are actually a total of 55 full page illustrations in the text as per the "list of illustrations." This "complete" issue published at $3.00 was probably released simultaneously with the "popular" issue 305 pages with 20 illustrations published at 75¢. In any event both editions were available by or before Scribner Armstrong issued the first part of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND in 1875 as both are advertised on the title leaf verso along with A FLOATING CITY and THE BLOCKADE-RUNNERS the latter noted as "just issued." Regardless of the matter of priority of these Scribner Armstrong editions this "complete" issue is quite scarce and it is a very desirable edition of A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH. Shepard's pirated edition was published the same day as Scribner's authorized new edition of MERIDIANA their first edition to be printed in America.
