Text entirely in German. <br /> <br /> Uncommon collection of brief parables and humorous vignettes each intended to illustrate a particular virtue vice or crime - Rejuvenation Kindness Friendship Industry; Superstition Jealousy Fratricide Adultery etc - built around the author's conceit of a book organized as a pleasure-garden wherein "Just as a garden lover tired from office business and worries is refreshed again and.comes alive when he strolls around in his sweet-smelling flower field picking a little flower here and there.so a person recovers his spirits when he occasionally devotes an hour to reading various moral stories picking their morals as he would flowers and fruits and applying their beneficial use." from the author's Foreword; translation ours. Apparently the only published work by Caspar Blanckard to whom we can find no reference beyond his authorship of the current work. The eulogy on Machiavelli is by one of the 18th-century editors of Machiavelli's works the Count Baldelli-Boni. It was read at the Florentine Royal Academy on August 7 1794 and published the same year. A second edition was printed in 1796 and it was included in the 1796 edition of Opere di Niccolò Machiavelli printed in Livorno. 17411352First edition of Mazzuchelli's biography of the infamous poet Pietro Aretino 1492-1556 known as the 'scourge of princes'. Aretino's satirical sonnets and burlesques were so feared by the nobles and princes of his day that they appear to have handed out large sums of money to buy his silence. This so-called patronage funded a notoriously profligate lifestyle and his home in Venice where he went having been banished from his home town of Arezzo on the publication of his sonnet against indulgences became the scene of continuous revelling and orgies.<br /> The preface pp. iii-viii is supplied by A.F. Seghezzi. Giuseppe Bartoli's letter to Mazzuchelli on the subject of the present work praising the latter for his 'erudizione si ammirabile' is also included pp. 263-267. The text is also accompanied by extensive bibliographical footnotes and a thirty-one page index. <i><br /></i><br /><i><br /></i><i>8vo engraved portrait frontispiece and pp. viii 303 1 colophon 4 advertisements in contemporary glazed cream paper boards front joint cracking headcap chipped some other light wear and stains yellow labels on spine lettered in gilt the lower one ruled in ink.</i><br /><br />Brunet III 1563. 177612401Venice: s.n. 1776. Modern vellum mostly uncut. <p> The paintings 181 drawings 1211 and books 350 owned by Francesco Algarotti a true Enlightenment figure. He was a widely recognized philosopher a popularizer of Newtonianism an intimate of Frederick II of Prussia and art advisor to Augustus III Elector of Saxony. Francesco's wide ranging love affairs involved i.a. John Hervey 2nd Baron Hervey 1696-1743 and Lady Mary Wortley Montagu 1689-1762. On his death his collections passed to and were augmented by his brother Bonomo 1706-76 whose daughter put this catalog to press. Its authorship is attributed to architect Giannantonio Selva 1753-1819 and conservator and curator Pietro Edwards 1744-1821. A French translation appeared immediately and a German version in 1780.<br /> The paintings and drawings are organized by artist giving birth and death dates and principal places of activity. Predominantly Italian 15th- to 18th-century the paintings are carefully described the support and dimensions noted and an aesthetic judgement historical note or scholarly reference often added. Handled summarily the drawings - even those of Michelangelo - are designated watercolor red crayon pen and ink etc. with those on colored paper so indicated.
