With half-titles in each volume. 8vo handsomely bound in vellum over blue paper-covered boards with the publisher's original printed paper labels on the spines top edge gilt others untrimmed xvi 315; 332; 370 pp. A set in beautiful condition the text fresh and as pristine but for a bit of the typical mellowing or occasional age evidence. The bindings are sturdy and strong and show little wear or use a little bit of spotting from age to the bindings publisher's printed labels are fresh and very legible. Ownership signature of James Buchanan unobtrusively at top of the titlepage and stamp of the Bellfield Library on each title-page and occasionally at chapter openings no other markings within hard-to-see evidence of small circular shelf labels once being on the spine tops. FIRST EDITION OF A SCARCE AND EXCELLENT WORK THIS SET IN UNCOMMONLY FINE AND WELL-PRESERVED CONDITION and with all half-titles as is often not the case. Sir Walter Scott was considered to be the inventor of the historical novel and the success of his Waverley series was immediate and long lasting throughout the English speaking world.<br> Set shortly after the English Civil War WOODSTOCK was inspired by the legend of the Good Devil of Woodstock which in 1649 supposedly tormented parliamentary commissioners who had taken possession of a royal residence at Woodstock Oxfordshire. The story deals with the escape of Charles II in 1652 during the Commonwealth and his final triumphant entry into London on 29 May 1660. David Hume's HISTORY OF ENGLAND gave Scott most of the historical background.<br> As with all the Waverley novels prior to 1827 WOODSTOCK was published anonymously. This first volume is 26.6 X 19.8 cm with 14 full page color woodcuts by Kano Tomonobu and Kajita Hanko. #167 of 200 from a deluxe edition on Japanese hosho paper. Covers soiled and a bit edgeworn one cvorner chipped. The contents are very good and the impressions and colors are quite lovely. This work despite its French text may be seen as squarely in the tradition of the Japanese ehon and it shares many characteristics of the revival of picture book printing in mid to late Meiji demonstrated by other works: an emerging Nihonga style skilled printed increasingly restrained coloration etc. In that context the large scale of its illustrations renders it particularly interesting. Probably Grandville's most famous work and one that epitomizes best his fantastical imagination. Plates and text clean and attractive. Quarter red morocco with blindstamped red pebbled cloth covers which perfectly match appears full red leather. Raised spine bands and gilt. Rubbing around gutters and the raised bands and some typical shelfwear besides. Endpapers are a silky moire material and they have some soiling. Gilt foreedges. Garnier Freres unknown

In the present work Massei examines the various health problems that can be linked to poverty and proposes a number of remedies chiefly linked to hygiene. He argues against the notion that almsgiving can provide a solution proposing instead a system whereby municipal aid is offered in people's homes.Previously Massei had done extensive work on public education in Bologna and was involved in a project to reform public charities in the light of the increasing numbers of poor people. His work with the Società agrarian of Bologna initiated much research on rural poverty and its causes. </em> hardcover

Firmly bound inside with clean bright pages. With only four of nine albumen photographs tipped in. Present are the first four images: Great Yosemite Fall frontis The Grizzly Giant opposite p. 27 The High Sierras p. 33 The Gates of the Valley p. 40. No evidence that other 5 plates were bound in as leaves where they should be are not present. Included photographs are fresh and bright.</p><p>Rare account of a camping trip in the High Sierra undertaken by University of California professor of geology and history Joseph Le Conte in July and August 1870 accompanied by Professor Frank Soule Jr. and eight members of the student body. This was Le Conte's first trip to the Yosemite region to be followed by ten more over the next thirty years. The work is notable for the excellent photographs some featuring members of the party in the marvelous setting of Yosemite others the scenic wonders uncluttered by human presence. Farquhar speculates that the pictures were taken by "one or more of the professional photographers who operated in Yosemite Valley." There were ten members of the party and according to Joseph N. 181743772Foligno: Feliciano Campitelli 1817. Submarine warfare before Fulton First edition to include the section on underwater navigation illustrated with a wonderful etching of a submarine propelled by oars including a cut-away view. Count Gaetano Marchetti Tomassi 1774-1857 a nobleman born in Foligno near Perugia was an amateur scientist. He devised one of several methods of squaring the circle which constitutes the first part of the first treatise of the present book the second part containing a discussion on conical sections. The most interesting part however is the second treatise where the author proposes a new model of submarine moved by the tides and able to submerge and resurface with the use of a mechanism similar to the swimbladder of fish. Marchetti Tomassi claims to have first described this boat in a publication issued in Ancona in 1800 though in a very imperfect form. Apparently a boat built to those specifications was given a trial at Rouen under the eye of Napoleon. Thus Marchetti Tomassi anticipated Fulton at least in the concept of a submarine though he does not appear to have heard of him. Marchetti proposes military applications for his submarine though he has no conception of a torpedo and only mentions the use of classical artillery kept dry in his submarine. Quarto 204 x 144 mm. 6 etched plates. Contemporary bottle green half roan patterned paper boards crudely marbled edges. A little light toning some worming at the spine with trails penetrating through the text-block largely marginal but minor loss to text and plates rear hinge cracked but holding remains very good. The artist Titian Peale whose illustrations are noted for their beauty and accuracy created more than half of this book's plates. 189724<i>This book is over 122 years old. <br />"The Raven"</i> in particular—Poe investigates the loss of ideal beauty and the difficulty in regaining it. These pieces are usually narrated by a young man who laments the untimely death of his beloved. <i>"To Helen"</i> is a three stanza lyric that has been called one of the most beautiful love poems in the English language. The subject of the work is a woman who becomes in the eyes of the narrator a personification of the classical beauty of ancient Greece and Rome. <i>"Lenore"</i> presents ways in which the dead are best remembered either by mourning or celebrating life beyond earthly boundaries. In <i>"The Raven"</i> Poe successfully unites his philosophical and aesthetic ideals. In this psychological piece a young scholar is emotionally tormented by a raven's ominous repetition of "Nevermore" in answer to his question about the probability of an afterlife with his deceased lover. Charles Baudelaire noted in his introduction to the French edition of <i>"The Raven"</i>: "It is indeed the poem of the sleeplessness of despair; it lacks nothing: neither the fever of ideas nor the violence of colors nor sickly reasoning nor drivelling terror nor even the bizarre gaiety of suffering which makes it more terrible." Poe also wrote poems that were intended to be read aloud. Experimenting with combinations of sound and rhythm he employed such technical devices as repetition parallelism internal rhyme alliteration and assonance to produce works that are unique in American poetry for their haunting musical quality. In <i>"The Bells"</i> for example the repetition of the word "bells" in various structures accentuates the unique tonality of the different types of bells described in the poem.Poe's stature as a major figure in world literature is primarily based on his ingenious and profound short stories poems and critical theories which established a highly influential rationale for the short form in both poetry and fiction. Regarded in literary histories and handbooks as the architect of the modern short story Poe was also the principal forerunner of the "art for art's sake" movement in nineteenth-century European literature. Whereas earlier critics predominantly concerned themselves with moral or ideological generalities Poe focused his criticism on the specifics of style and construction that contributed to a work's effectiveness or failure. In his own work he demonstrated a brilliant command of language and technique as well as an inspired and original imagination. Poe's poetry and short stories greatly influenced the French Symbolists of the late nineteenth century who in turn altered the direction of modern literature.
