Second English edition of Claude Perraults 1613-1688 influential work on classical architecture presents a remarkable combination of intellectual rigor practical guidance and fine engraving. Originally published in Paris in 1683 Perraults treatise was at the time controversial and dismissed by the Académie Royale dArchitecture as unsuitable for students and never republished in France or abroad apart from England.The English translation undertaken by the architect John James ca. 1672-1746 first appeared in 1708 and this second edition of 1722 adds an alphabetical explanation of architectural terms and several new engravings. John Sturt 1658-1730 celebrated engraver and publisher enriched the edition with a beautifully engraved title page a dedication leaf to Thomas Earl of Pembroke 1656-1733 and more than 50 engraved initials head- and tailpieces textual illustrations and retains 6 engraved plates illustrating the Tuscan Doric Ionic Corinthian and Composite orders.Perraults work exerted lasting influence on English architecture. Figures such as Nicholas Hawksmoor ca. 1661-1736 John Vanbrugh 1664-1726 and William Kent 1685-1748 drew upon his principles while later theorists including Isaac Ware 1704-1766 and William Chambers 1723-1796 integrated his approach into their own treatises. This second English edition therefore represents both a practical manual for builders and a key intellectual link between French architectural theory and English practice.With the initials WD and the name W. Danby written on the front pastedown possibly referring to William Danby 1752-1833 the English writer who rebuilt his family home Swinton Park and constructed a replica of Stonehenge on his estate. In 1784 he served as High Sheriff of Yorkshire. The binding shows some wear with some rubbing to the boards and spine. There is a tear to the lower margin of the title page not affecting text or illustration and some staining throughout particularly on the page containing the table of chapters to part I on pp. 94-95 and on p. 25. Avignon: Pierre Patte 1759.First edition of the Memoirs by the author of Mother Goose's Tales very rare when preserved in an elegant ancient binding as our copy. Tchemerzine V 188The Memoirs stop after the break with Colbert and were published by the architect Pierre Patte. Originally coming from the region of Tours but established in Paris the Perrault family belongs to a haute bourgeoisie of Robe with a modern and Jansenist sensibility whose sons are lawyer Jean receiver general of finances Pierre architect and doctor Claude or doctor in theology Nicolas. As for Charles if he seems to follow a banal course of a future robin brilliant literary studies at the college of Beauvais in Paris law degrees and registration at the bar in 1651 he actually breaks with the school institution. Then we see him trying to celebrate the great events of the kingdom: odes on peace on the occasion of the Treaty of the Pyrenees 1659 on the wedding of Louis XIV and Marie-Therese 1660 on the birth of the Dauphin 1661 with a controversial literary talent by Racine but with a growing political success to the point of appearing soon to the young King and his administrators as a great choice to carry out the cultural project of the reordering of France; while he is committed to the superintendence of the royal buildings Perrault who has proved again his encomiastic science Discours sur lacquisition de Dunkerque par le roi 1663 is appointed on the recommendation of Chapelain secretary of the Petite Academy future Académie des inscriptions et des belles-lettres. He is elected to the French Academy 1671 of which he became Chancellor at the death of Seguier 1672 and redefines its rules of operation. Its effectiveness is once again such that in the same year Colbert creates for him a tailor-made position the general control of the buildings. After the death of Colbert 1683 he is dismissed from his position of Controller General and excluded from the Petite Académie by Louvois; only remained Director of the Academy he is de facto placed in an almost total retreat at the age of fifty-five. Charles Perrault then devotes himself to the education of his children he was a widower since 1678 but more importantly resumes and deepens a religious reflection Épître chrétienne sur la pénitence praise of Louis XIV protector of the Catholic religion 1683 ode Aux nouveaux convertis 1685 etc. which will prove to be the ethical base of the upcoming Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. As evidenced by his consultation with two religious former moderates Bossuet and Huet about his Saint Paulin évêque de Nole 1686 epic in six songs that appears to be followed by an epistle to Fontenelle Le Génie. On January 27 1687 the public reading of the Siècle de Louis XIV by Charles Perrault to the glory of the Moderns caused a quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns to burst whose stakes exceed the controversies of their respective leaders Boileau and himself. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Claude Perrault in first volume. Contemporary French calf spines gilt edges red; some occasional browning; repairs to joints some rubbing. Unidentified armorial bookplate to front pastedown beneath monogrammed bookplate D.P. with chipmunk and two mice. A later reduced format edition of Perraults Memoires of 1671-1676 Perraults study of this nature was first published in 1669 with the results of investigations of five animals and later expanded with studies of over forty animals. Prior to 1670 most descriptions of animals paid little attention to their internal structure and there were very few images in natural history encyclopedias that depicted skeletons or muscles. That changed with the establishment of the Académie des Sciences in Paris in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert with the approval of King Louis XIV. The Academy functioned with neither statutes nor regulations until 1699. At that time the Academy used the term mathématique to encompass the fields that are now called astronomy mathematics and physics and the term physique to encompass the fields that are now called anatomy botany zoology and chemistry. In January 1699 Louis reorganized the Academy giving it first regulations. The effect was to give the King more control over their activities in exchange for becoming an official institution under his protection with the new name Académie Royale des Sciences. One of the original academicians the physician Claude Perrault organized regular sessions at which participants could dissect deceased animals from Louis XIVs royal menagerie and record all they observed. Lions chameleons bears gazelles wolves ostriches crocodiles monkeys eagles tigers porcupines and salamanders among some were all laid open by the academics scalpels. These superb folding plates record in great detail the pioneering work at the Academy. These three volumes in three parts focus on the transformative and foundational years of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and Claude Perraults efforts which had made comparative anatomy a vital tool for the classifying naturalist. Eight half-page woodcut vignettes one for each story. Bound with the two final blank leaves. We could find only two records of this at auction in the past one of which is the present copy and the other record may also be this present copy. This edition does not show up in the ESTC and we could only find one library copy at Princeton. Contemporary Dutch floral boards heightened in gilt. Endpapers renewed. Some leaves with light spotting. Previous owner Ann White's contemporary ink signature on verso of frontispiece. Bound a bit tight at inner margin but still readable. Overall a very good copy. The stories included in this volume are as follows: Little Red Riding-Hood. The Fairy. Blue Beard. The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods. The Master Cat; or Puss in Boots. Cinderilla sic; or The Little Glass Slipper. Riquet with the Tuft. Little Thumb. Perrault's fairy tales were first collected together and published in 1697. The continuing popularity of these tales is attested to by the large number of editions that have appeared since that time in many languages. A very early rare edition of the "Mother Goose" fairy tales of Charles Perrault which is an exact reprint of the Dutch counterfeit published the same year as the first edition of Paris 1697. Twelvemo 4 5/8 x 2 13/16 inches; 119 x 71 mm. 6 175 1 table pp. With engraved frontispiece title-page vignette engraved head-and-tail-pieces and initials and with eight engraved vignettes one for each tale. Besides this copy we could only find one other copy at auction in the past 40 years. This edition features the eight tales found in the first edition each illustrated with a vignette: Sleeping Beauty Little Red Riding Hood Bluebeard Puss in Boots The Fairies Cinderella Riquet with the Tuft and Tom Thumb. Beautifully bound by M. Godillot in full tan morocco. Boards triple-ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately stamped and lettered in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Top margin occasionally trimmed close just touching headline. Previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper. Housed in a morocco lined marbled paper slipcase. About fine. "The title gives the author as the Son of Monsieur Perrault of the Academie François sic as in the 1697 forgery. The dedication to Mademoiselle is signed P. Darmancour. In fact the participation in the writing of the Tales of Perrault's youngest son Pierre Perrault Darmancour 1678-1700 is now attested." According to Alde "This edition is extremely rare; it is missing from the BnF and all French public libraries. Tchemerzine mentions it without having seen it according to Brunet's supplement who himself only cites it from Baron Pichon's catalog 1869 I no. 766: "Rare Edition" a red morocco copy by Trautz-Bauzonnet acquired for 145 francs by Techener. It was not included in the collection of the Count of Lignerolles who nevertheless owned eleven editions of the Tales published between 1697 and 1781 1894 II nos. 1911-1921." HBS 69350. $17500.
