1966114231Likely compiled in the US: 1966. A souvenir of the opening of the Japan office in 1966 and early efforts to market the forthcoming Japanese edition. A selection of the photographs shows the journalist and Japanologist Frank B. Gibney 1924-2006 who joined the company in 1966 to drive the expansion into Asia and who edited the first edition in Japanese published as a 28-volume set between 1972 and 1975. The album opens with shots from the 28 February 1966 office ribbon-cutting Gibney posing with his pipe. A second section records a window display and an exhibition of books and images organized at department stores in Tokyo and Osaka and the arrangement ends with photographs of events and of a television broadcast in which Gibney participated. Fluent in Japanese Gibney served in US naval intelligence during the Second World War and found fame as a journalist during the Korean War. He worked for Britannica for a decade. Published under the title Buritanika Kokusai Daihyakka-jiten the Japanese-language edition supplemented material from the English-language edition with articles appealing to a Japanese audience. Folio 325 x 305 mm. With 53 monochrome photographs ranging from 90 x 65 mm to 250 x 150 mm corner-mounted on thick card leaves 9 laid-down labels with typed English captions couple of annotations. Original green cloth commercial album spine and front cover silver. Photographs bright a few with minor creasing couple of corner-mounts lifting binder with light wear paper residue at foot of spine: very good. hardcover
