This edition is heavily abridged. Michaux was commissioned by the French government in 1801 to sell his father's tree plantations in Charleston. His journey lasted from August 1801 until March 1803 during which time he travelled extensively throughout the eastern central and southern U.S. Among his stops were Lexington and the horse farms of Kentucky; Nashville and Jonesborough Tennessee; Morganton North Carolina; and Chester Columbia and finally Charleston South Carolina. He comments heavily on the flora and fauna of Georgia and the Carolinas as well as on the health of the cotton and tobacco trades. A highly interesting account of a journey during which the author compiled much information for his later work The North American Sylva. The large very detailed map affords an excellent view of the East Coast Southeast and Midwest at the time. unknown

First published in Paris in 1804 Michaux's classic narrative relates his travels west of the Allegheny Mountains. The author is most famous as a botanist and author of North American Sylva. His 1800-mile journey began when he in the company of Jean Chaptal sailed for America and arrived at Charleston South Carolina October 9 1801. He had been instructed to close down a nursery founded by his father Andrew Michaux at Charleston for economic reasons and he sent back to France the seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 he began travels in other parts of the United States before returning to France at the end of 1803 and organizing the shipments of plants and seeds he sent back. In this travelogue Michaux comments on the various botanical specimens he observes as well as wildlife commerce viticulture in Kentucky Cherokees in Tennessee and much more. The cloth of the spine darkened restored six-inch tear into the map without loss from the upper gutter. This printing is an abridgment of the second English edition to be included in Phillips'' 1805 Collection of Voyages and is a new translation from the French differing from the 1805 Mawman and Crosby issues. Tconsiderable coverage is given to Botany. The map depicts the West to and slightly beyond the Mississippi River with much detail in Kentucky and Tennessee Native American territories "Nation of the Bear" "Wandering Chipewas" etc. and East & West Florida to the south. A pristine untrimmed copy of the first book by the author of the "North American Sylva" in period mustard colored laid papered boards. <br /> <br /> Francois Michaux made an 1800-mile journey made through the Eastern United States following in the footsteps of his father Andre who was on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. "Michaux began to seek an opportunity to continue his father's work in North America. he sailed for America and arrived at Charleston South Carolina on 9 October 1801. He had been instructed to close down the nursery founded by his father at Charleston for economic reasons and he sent back to France those seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 Michaux toured the forests of New Jersey with David Hosack and also visited Hosack's newly established Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. From there he made an extended visit to Philadelphia where he met William Bartram and saw William Hamilton's fine collection of trees at Woodlands. He then made a journey through Pennsylvania Kentucky and Tennessee before returning to Carolina and he met on the way many of his father's old acquaintances. He returned to France at the end of 1803 to organize the shipments of plants and seeds that he had sent back and to make a series of reports on his work. The first volume of Michaux covers pines and firs walnut and hickories the second volume presents 20 different oaks with maples birches beeches chestnuts and nyssas among other groups and the third volume documents the magnolias along with ribinias the tulip tree the catalpa and others. The Volumes II and III of the Nuttall volumes this set lacks Volume I cover trees left out of Michaux as well adding descriptions of trees from Oregon California and the Rocky Mountains where Michaux did not explore and collect. The first combined edition of Michaux and Nuttall was completed in 1849 just five years before this current issue was published. Sabin commented on the combined edition: 'Of the two works united it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivaled interest and beauty giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle.' This publication is the most important work on American trees prior to the 20th century. It is the product of the efforts of two of the greatest naturalists to work in 19th century America Francois A. Michaux and Thomas Nuttall. The beautifully executed plates illustrate leaves and nuts or berries of American trees across the entire continent. "It is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivalled interest and beauty"-Sabin. This is a reissue of the combined edition of the two works issued by the Philadelphia publishers Rice Rutter & Co. successors to Rice and Hart. Michaux's work was based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America and those of his father from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. His book was first published with a Philadelphia imprint in 1817-19 although actually printed in Paris where the plates were engraved as well. These plates were executed by the great French flower painters Redoute and his associate Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting were destroyed by fire but the copper plates were separately stored and survived to be employed in this edition where the work of Michaux fills the first three volumes. Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day traveling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in 1820s and 1830s to gather botanical specimens. His work designed to supplement that of Michaux covers eastern species missed by. unknown
