Written by Prosper Merimee a French dramatist historian archaeologist and short story writer. His best known work was 'Carmen' a novella which became the basis of Bizet's opera Carmen. He was the first translator of much Russian literature into French. This volume includes his translation of Gogol's 'The Government Translator'.In the French language.From the University of Keele library.In a binding by J. Edmond of Aberdeen; with their binders stamp. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally smart with rubbing to the spine particularly to the head and tail and boards. This historical novel was written by Prosper Merimee and features a story set during the reign of King Charles IX in the sixteenth century combining fiction with accounts of real historical events such as the 'St. Bartholomew's day massacre'. The work is beautifully accompanied by illustrations by Edouard Toudouze a French artist. Bound in half morocco with marbled paper to the boards.
