The first are two sets of color 13 full page prints and 25 partial page prints amid text and is housed in folded wraps with a glassine jacket.The second is composed of 51 1 black prints with one full page color print and one partial. All housed in the rear in a folded pocket with the 1 black print being the cover print. Limited. This is #43 of a total of 275 copies. Number 43 is in the subset from numbers 31-50 twenty copies on Rives paper same as 1-30 but without the original watercolor. Both suites housed in loose boards. Scattered yet sparse faint foxing throughout. Pockets fraying as well as board hinges. Loose boards then rest in a slipcase with rubbed edges and scuffed corners. See photos. Of only 410 copies produced this volume is no. 152 one of 125 copies printed with a suite of fifteen plates in black and white to the rear.Illustrated with fifteen colour lithograph plates by French artist Guy Arnoux alongside the further fifteen plates to the rear. Collated complete.Best known for the novella 'Carmen' this is a stunning edition of Merimee's historical novel first published in 1828. In a half crushed morocco binding with marbled paper covered boards. Minor fading to back strip. Otherwise externally fine. The odd spot to fore edge of text block. With publisher's original paper wraps and back strip bound in to the front and rear of the work. Internally firmly bound.
