One of the earliest realistic novels written by Alain-Rene Lesage this work narrates of the adventures and education of a young valet as he progresses through masters in high and low society. Originally published in four volumes between 1715 and 1735 it helped popularised the picaresque novel with the happy ending adding a new twist to the tradition. In the original French. With some six-hundred vignette illustrations in text by Jean Gigoux French painted and lithographer. Lesage was a prolific French satirical dramatist and author. In quarter leather binding over marbled boards and endpapers. Externally generally sound rubbed to joints chipped to head and tail of spine minor loss to head of spine boards rubbed and bumped rubbing to joints. Internally front hinges strained binding held by two cords only to p. 17. Light spotting scattered to the leaves. With some six-hundred vignette illustrations in text by Jean Gigoux. With occasional plates by Cruikshank; the frontispiece of Dr. Sangrado reveals a character who would not have been out of place in Haight Ashbury ca. 1969 down to what looks like a roach-clip he's holding memoir by Thomas Roscoe.
