Gil Blas is a picaresque novel by French author Alain-René Lesage published between 1715 and 1735. Considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. Lesage uses witty valets in the service of thieving masters women of questionable morals cuckolded yet happy husbands gourmands ridiculous poets false savants and dangerously ignorant doctors to make his point. Each class and each occupation becomes an archetype. Some light wear along edges of bindings lightly scuffed at edges and leather at front joint o first volume cracked but held together. First American edition of the Cruikshank illustrated version. 2 volumes. 8vo 7.75 x 4.75 inches bound in unusual and quite attractive dark brown publisher's floral blind embossed cloth gilt spines good to very good light wear to corners spine ends show some wear and loss light wear along rear outer joint of first volume and also some loss to middle of spine neatly touched up with matching color so it doesn't show contents very good light to moderate foxing throughout heaviest to endpapers and outer pages early owner's name and info. on flyleaf of first volume and on first blank of second volume Samuel Trull of Boston 1814-1876 a physician who had a practice in the Bulfinch Triangle area of Boston; he trained at Harvard. With occasional plates by Cruikshank; the frontispiece of Dr. Sangrado reveals a character who would not have been out of place in Haight Ashbury ca. 1969 down to what looks like a roach-clip he's holding memoir by Thomas Roscoe. Numerous head pieces and int-text b&w illustrations by Jean Gigoux. Square tight and clean throughout with perhaps an errant spot hear or there but barely. Gilt edges a bit dulled and blemished in areas. Mild rubbing to edges and tips. Small neat contemporary ownership signature on title page of both volumes. 183221266Venice: G. Tasso 1832. Very good overall. An unusual map from an Italian edition of Le Sage's historical atlas. The map is credited to Buchon in the title cartouche who originated the map in 1825. This edition was published by Girolamo Tasso. The map illustrates the United States from the east coast up to the Rocky Mountains and shows the acquisition of various territories up to 1825 including the Louisiana Purchase. Major cities forts roads and Indian villages are located. There is a color key at lower left and the routes of Long and Talcott are noted. There are interesting early details in Oregon & the Missouri Territories especially in the northwest and plains. The uncolored area on the left is labeled "Messicana" and includes the "Provincia de Texas" which would become an independent republic in four years. There is also an outline of "Nuovo Messico" New Mexico. 18 1/4 x 13 1/2". Restoration to margins. Original color touched up. Ref: Phillips A #127-21b. G. Tasso unknown
