Bright copy of an early printing of the the author's first book first published 1878. Printed by Edmund Evans arguably the finest printer of British colour printed books of the late nineteenth century. Our dating is suggested by the printer's colophon later style on rear free endpaper recto. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Fully illustrated with fifty three colour plates. each with a printed tissue guard and ninety mono illustrations. A fine and bright copy bound in attractive late twentieth century half dark green morocco. Spine with raised bands each decorated with gilt piping. The compartments are ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Green cloth and ruled gilt borders on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. A little light spotting to a few pages otherwise a near fine copy in a lovely leather binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder. Adam and Charles Black.
