Dark brown printed wrappers stitched with brown thread. . Narrow quarto. Each page is illustrated some with multiple images in black white and orange and printed on brown paper. Very minor edgewear else a fine crisp copy of a scarce piece of advertising. In the present work there is an illustration for each letter accompanied by rhyming verse. One such example is: "F is for First / like the boy in the race /Just like Palmer Tires which hold the first place." The alphabet and verses are followed by a list of tires sold by Goodrich examples include "The Regular Roadster" which is "The Universal Tire for Pleasure Business General Riding Road Uses and Road Racing. Light Strong Durable and Resilient" and "Mexican" which is "Extra Heavy Thread Two Ply. Heavier Air Tube. Covered Specially to Withstand Hard Usage and Rough Riding…A Good Tourist's Tire." First edition of this wonderfully illustrated and charming alphabet game/book featuring anthropomorphic letters in the “Kingdom of the Alphabet†set against the adventures of a Medieval/Renaissance Country of Vowels and the Isle of Consonants uniting over a banquet ball to form an alphabet. Marquet 1892-1984 and Desnoyer 1901-1988 were illustrators and miniaturists noted for their inventive games and illustrations who had originally designed this game/book in 1939. They were married to the well known painters Albert Marquet and Francois Denoyer respectively. Desnoyer a Russian-Ukrainian emigre from Kiev had originally landed in Bohemia by 1906 where she learned the Western alphabet and later settled in France. This particular copy not only features the four colour lithograph boards for children to cut out and play the suggested alphabet game but also the 2 additional boards for an adult word game and back board to create toys which are typically missing as are often the colour-tinted instruction sheets. Colour-pictorial card covers slightly rubbed; small amount of red pencil scribble on the outside rear cover and some slight and inoffensive red colouring-in to the figures on the front cover; a very good copy internally fine. A charming pictorial alphabet book advertising country pleasure outings by public transport in the vicinity of London. The illustrations show two children and their aunt on such an outing with all figures stylised as wooden toys. The alphabet begins 'A is for Auntie who's so fond of Us; That she takes us for rides on the top of the Bus' and continues with rhyming couplets in a similar vein. The letterpress text gives details of return fares to Eastcote Horsenden Hill Ickenham Ruislip Southend South Harrow and Uxbridge together with details of tea rooms and resorts at those destinations. <p>The catalogue record for an example held by the London Transport Museum 1997/13265 attributes the illustrations to Violet Holdsworth. We have traced very few institutional holdings. 'Reg. No. 108-10M-5.4.23' is printed on the recto of the rear cover; we read this as indicating a print-run of 10000 copies.
