Yellow-and-black-patterned endpapers. Printed in two columns. Wood engraved head- and tail-pieces. "Sammlung alter und neuer geistreicher Lieder . . . der Evangelisch-Reformirten Gemeinen" has separate title page dated 1797. Final 33 unpaginated pages contain the Heidelberger catechism and some prayers. Former owner inscription in German script on blank leaf following front free endpaper: "Karl Friederich Philipps Gesangbuch Philadelphia 1826." Early American Imprints 32100; First Century of German Language Printing 1090. This was the first official German Reformed hymnal printed in the United States; later editions dropped the hyphen using the title Das Neue und Verbesserte Gesangbuch. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed with some loss of gilt; edges of leather spine label chipped; most of original owner's name on front label has been rubbed out; small scrape to upper edge of front board; a few page corners creased; pages are slightly browned throughout; otherwise clean and tight. Binding worn especially along spine and spine giltstamping rubbed with a bit of chipping at spine head/tail but nevertheless quite tight and handleable and overall attractive; inner front flyleaf bears contemporary ink notations dated Leipzig 1769. Front fixed endpaper bears an unusual engraved bookplate with the name Norrie and the head of an African man framed by two arms from a coat of armor. In an old hand on the title page: Poulet. In Very Good- Condition: lacking 1 cm. leather from head of spine; corners are heavily rubbed with loss of leather; boards rubbed; lightly foxed; occasionally lightly soiled in margins; otherwise clean and tight. IV was deleted from this New 1743 Edition as this copy shows no evidence of removal in the binding gutter and the lettering of adjacent plates V W is sequential without omission. Lacks front flyleaf a few period notations inked on main title contents with scattered internal notations.
