Exterior shows some spotting and toning with the worst issue is some tears around the spine edges. The top has a tear of about an inch the bottom has a larger tear along the spine edge that measures about 3 inches on the front cover with a smaller tear on the back. The string held binding is still intact in the pages are clean with the exception of some light foxing. There are no signatures or bookplates no handwriting no library markings none of the interior text pages have tears. This is a very rare government publication in the only date present is on the last page which states October 1879. <br/> <br/> Government Printing Office paperback
1900208Manila 1900. Very good. Typed letter signed 1p. Typed on thin paper. Folded. A true copy of a typed letter by Gen. J.F. Bell that recommends Sgt. Maj. George J. Oden of the 36th Volunteer Infantry for a Certificate of Merit for gallantry during an engagement with Insurgents native Filipinos who rebelled against American rule after Spain ceded the islands to the United States in the mountains near Mangaterem on November 28 1899 during the Spanish-American War. According to the text of the letter "When the attack was finally made he tore down the mountain side at the head of a half dozen men into the midst of a large number of Insurgents shooting right and left and displaying great fearlessness and gallantry. He was foremost of all and seemingly tireless flew down the rough trail finally winding up at the bottom chasing all he could see alone. His enthusiasm and unconscious fearlessness was something pleasant to see." Certified as a true copy of the letter by a Buffalo Soldier a First Lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Cavalry. unknown books

Corners and edges worn spine rubbed boards scuffed. Initial leaves of first volume torn away but present. Several other leaves chipped and torn throughout. With many official signatures and docketing stamps. Good. Two volumes of orders promulgated in 1889 and 1900 by the American military government of Cuba after the cessation of hostilities in the Spanish-American War. Under the terms of the Teller Amendment to the Congressional Joint Resolution for war with Spain in 1898 the United States denied the intention of using the conflict as a pretext for the annexation of Cuba and promised to leave the island following the termination of the war. The American military therefore oversaw the creation of the new independent Cuban government before departing in 1902. The documents contained in this collection consist of over two hundred orders in both English and Spanish from the Headquarters Division of Cuba that helped to shape the emerging civilian government. They include instructions for the running of elections the organization of the courts and school system the appointments for various government offices provisions for tax regulations and many other critical issues facing Cuba at its independence. The directives cover two periods from January to July in 1899 and from July to September in 1901. Many of the orders are signed in manuscript by the assistants to the military governor for the island Gen. Leonard Wood including assistant adjutant generals J.B. Hickey and L.W.V. Kennon and Brig. Gen. Chief of Staff Adna R. Chaffee. An interesting documentation of the first American occupation of Cuba. hardcover books
1898WRCAM46791Chickamauga Park Ga 1898. 5pp. Quarto written on "Black Hills Squadron" stationery. Old fold lines. Minor wear. Very good plus. A pair of letters written by Leighton H. Baxter to a friend back home. In his first letter he states that he is "not an enlisted soldier but has a regulation suit.a horse to ride and am fixed up very nicely. He works for the commander of the squadron Major Leigh H. French presumably as a teenage civilian clerk. His duties include "a good deal of writing to do telegrams to send take notes of cases tried in the regiment and a great many other minor duties." He sleeps in the same tent as the Major and takes his meals with the officers. He is well fed but is very glad not to be a private as they "fare badly." It is however "a regular circus to see the boys ride and shoot they beat Buffalo Bill all to pieces." Baxter reports that there are some 40000 to 50000 troops at Camp Thomas with more due to arrive. Some have already departed for "Porto Rico" and he expects his squadron to be going there at any time. In his second letter he notes that the men in his regiment are all "crack shots and fine riders" and all from around Deadwood and the Black Hills. He has been drilling with the men and has learned to handle a sword fairly well. He also mentions practicing "rough riding.such as leaping from a horse while he is running then back again picking up a hat while at full speed etc." <br> <br> The Third U.S. Volunteer Cavalry was mustered into service in May 1898 and commanded by Melvin Grigsby attorney general for the state of South Dakota. The unit was known both as the "Black Hills Squadron" and as "Grigsby's Cowboy Cavalry." Its commander Maj. Leigh H. French was trained as a medical doctor and surgeon and had a practice in Washington D.C. when the war broke out. One of his captains Seth Bullock was the first sheriff of Deadwood. The squadron never saw active duty outside the continental United States spending most of its brief career at Camp Thomas in Georgia. In the crowded camp in the heat of a southern summer typhus measles and other illnesses were rampant and Grigsby's Cavalry lost twenty-seven men to disease. unknown books

Crespi's diary and is sending it via the ship that has just arrived; a second Serra letter dated Monterey 9 September 1779 reports on the various missions and states that he hopes to establish one in San Francisco. The third letter is by Sebastian Vizcaino dated Monterey 8 December 1602 reporting on his voyage of discovery along the California coast.<br>Â Â Â Â The facsimiles are on laid paper and in sepia ink and are great replicas of the originals with a great backstory as to their creation.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Adolph Sutro; later for sale by E. Overall a very good set generally very clean. Originally published at Madrid 1786-89 this great work is a valuable and comprehensive geographical historical and commercial gazetteer of the Americas. It covers the entire history of the Americas and is particularly rich in data relating to the Spanish possessions with particularly extensive sections on Chili Mexico Peru Venezuela etc. It also includes numerous entries dealing with Canada and the United States. The general section on "Nueva España New Spain is very well covered and begins with "A spacious kingdom of North America the limits of which toward the north are unknown.". California is covered giving a great deal of statistical information and includes a list of the missions of "New California" founded up to 1803. Appended is a vocabulary of provincial terms largely Spanish forming a catalogue of American plants birds and animals. A supplement provides the text of the Treaty of Peace between the United Kingdom and the United States War of 1812. "Thompson's edition for its additions etc. is infinitely superior to the original." One of three issues of this scarce Spanish- American War periodical published on board Dewey's flagship Olympia in Manila Bay. There was a total of seven numbers of this naval periodical the first two published in Nagasaki the third in Yokohama the fourth in Hong Kong and numbers five to seven in Manila. The present issue entirely devoted to the Battle of Manila Bay is among the most desirable and contains American accounts and a translated Spanish account of the battle several poems and a map of the scene of action made by a sailor "with a couple of sail needles." The magazine was written and edited by Apprentice First Class Louis Stanley Young and printed by Harry B. Glover on paper captured from the "Commandancia General del Arsenal de Cavite." Young a former printer himself improvised a print shop in a torpedo room on board the Olympia. An illustration of the Liberty Bell two flags an American eagle etc. is printed on the front wrapper in black red and blue. "A historic piece one of major proportions" - Moebs. 1836231491836. Diario Constitucional de Santiago de Cuba No. 57 November 1836 just months after the restoration of Spain's liberal Constitution of 1812. This newspaper records the transmission of Spanish constitutional government into eastern Cuba in late 1836 through decrees ministerial correspondence and public political dispute printed for circulation in Santiago de Cuba. Issued weeks after the political upheavals that restored constitutional rule in Spain this number shows how the language of the regency government the suppression and reorganization of state bodies and local declarations of loyalty to Isabel II reached colonial readers through the newspaper press. In a Cuban setting where metropolitan policy was filtered through governors ministries and municipal elites an issue such as this preserves the working connection between imperial administration and provincial print.<br /> <br /> Diario Constitucional de Santiago de Cuba. No. 57. Santiago de Cuba 27 November 1836. 4 pages. Folio newspaper issue. The masthead reads "DIARIO CONSTITUCIONAL / DE SANTIAGO DE CUBA" with the date line "DOMINGO 27 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1836." Page 1 opens with "MINISTERIO DE LA GOBERNACION DEL REINO" followed by a circular and a substantial "EXPOSICION A LA REINA GOBERNADORA" leading into a "REAL DECRETO" concerning the suppression of the Consejo Real de España e Indias. Interior pages continue the decree and carry translatedly legible sections including "MISCELANEA" notices on "Las islas turcas libres" and "Noticias sobre Tejas" and a long exchange under "REMITIDOS" dated "Cuba 25 de Noviembre de 1836" addressing militia service volunteers of Isabel II and the political insult attributed to an earlier subscriber. The issue survives as a complete four page folio with dense double column text throughout and no wrappers as issued.<br /> <br /> Printed in Santiago the issue shows constitutional and monarchist language being adapted for a colonial audience that was expected to follow ministry decrees military loyalty and debates over public honor in the same sheet. Folded as issued with minor edge chipping small losses at corners and margins some toning and closed tears and pinholes; complete and legible. Overall good condition. The juxtaposition of metropolitan government text Caribbean and Atlantic news and the local controversy printed in "Remitidos" gives the number a documentary range broader than a routine official gazette placing state policy beside the contested language of provincial political life. unknown

Bookplate of A.J. Cox to front pastedown. <br /> <br /> Really a nicely executed and elaborate binding of this text which relates some of the events leading up to the Spanish American War of 1898. Alfred J. Cox was a Chicago master book binder and collector and we would guess this book from a Chicago publisher was perhaps bound by Cox himself. It is listed in Catalogue of the Sumptuous 'Attic' Library of the late Alfred J.Cox which was sold at auction by the American Art Association in New York 1918. This title along with several others from the series by Latimer are listed as bound in full levant morocco in various colors #608. A nice example of American fine binding at the turn of the century.
