The dialog is carried out over six days Monday through Saturday with a different subject each day. The illustrator Elies Plana is a Barcelona based book artist and printer who has been working in the field for the last 15 years. After studying fine arts at the art school of Olot he joined the workshop of his father Miquel Plana. He learned the craft and the different techniques by helping and assisting his father in the production of over 100 fine books. He not only learned the love for the books but also for the craftsmanship involved in every stage of producing them. The type is 16-point Van Dijck in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris for the text with larger sizes handset for display and an ornamental type Fontanesi for the title an initial letter and act numbers. The names of characters are separated from the dialogue by a wavy rule. The rule running heads folios decorative type and speeches repeated in larger type beneath the illustrations are printed in burgundy ink. The illustrations were printed from photopolymer plates. The paper is Arches a French mould-made sheet. The binding done in-house is hand-sewn in full burgundy moiré satin with gold titling on the spine and front cover and a protective mylar jacket. Edition of 300 numbered copies plus 26 lettered copies hors de commerce signed by the translator and illustrator. The course to publication of this book took many turns. It was first suggested by our literary agent Fred Hill who put Hoyem in touch with his friend Brian Bedford a distinguished actor who specializes in Molière comedies. <br /> <br /> Photographs of a current production of "Tartuffe" proved impossible to obtain as illustrations. While waiting for another idea for the art Hoyem got in touch with the poet Richard Wilbur who had made an excellent translation of the play in rhymed verse and obtained permission to use it. Then William Hamilton the "New Yorker" cartoonist came to mind. Hoyem had met Hamilton in 1978 and admired his liquid line and quick capturing of character and expression in his send-ups of WASPs. But could he do period costumes Hamilton made seven charming drawings with the main characters in period dress and the servants in modern dress. <br /> <br /> To celebrate the publication the Arion staff presented a staged reading from the play directed by veteran actress and director Joy Carlin. From the Publisher see image - "Early in seventeenth century Germany two anonymous manuscripts were in circulation which would cause a stir in intellectual and spiritual communities in Europe with calls for reformation and a focus on the Hermetic-Cabalist tradition. The manuscripts were finally printed as the Fama Fraternitatis and Confessio Fraternitatis and told the story of the founding of a mysterious society; the Brethren of the Rosy Cross which eschewed religious dogma and called for the study of Alchemia Magia and Cabala. Considered a ludibrium by many including the supposed author Johann Valentin Andreae who later said he wrote them as a 'youthful jest' the Manifestos nonetheless ignited a firestorm of controversy which resulted in the rise of many forms of Rosicrucianism. Some of these movements have come down to us today in the form of magical orders such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn the Builders of the Adytum or AMORC now based in San Jose California. As the Master Therion wrote in Liber LXI vel Causae concerning purported Rosicrucian manuscripts; "You will readily understand that the genuineness of the claim matters no whit such literature being judged by itself not by its reputed sources." Seventeenth century Europe was expectant of political and religious change as two new stars appeared in firmament as discussed by Johannes Kepler in his De Stella nova in pede Serpentarii; De Stella incognita Cygni which was printed in Prague two years after the stars appeared in 1604. This unique celestial event depicted in the Temple of the Rosy Cross print fortified the call for political and spiritual renewal 'trumpeted' by the manifestos. This invisible college as the Rosicrucian Order was sometimes refered to is represented in the print as a temple on wheels 'under the shadow of the wings of the Lord.' Schweighardt was a supporter of Rosicrucian ideas but he was by no means alone in these endeavours as his reference to Julianus de Campis wielder of the sword shows. Of course there were other supporters such as Michael Maier Robert Fludd and Thomas Vaughan the latter causing to be printed the first English edition of the Manifestos. The Rosicrucian Manifestos describe the early life of Christian Rosencreutz his pilgrimage to the East in search of occult knowledge and his eventual founding of the mysterious Brothers of the Rosy Cross. The enigmatic and axiomatic writing style places the texts firmly into the western esotericism and includes critiques upon the 'closed minds' of society be it political religious or intellectual and includes the legend of the founder CRC and gives very detailed descriptions of the Hidden Symbolical Vault wherein the secrets of the order were secured along with the body of Christian Rosencreutz laid in restful repose under an Everburing Lamp. The appended Letter from the Brothers of R.C. describes the Invisible Magical Mountain of the Adepts how to get there and what to expect while 'visiting'". Limited Edition. A key translation by Haruki Murakami of Chandler's sixth novel - the apex of 20th century detective fiction winner of the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1955 and basis for Robert Altman's 1973 film starring Elliott Gould and Sterling Hayden. While Murakami is world-renowned for his fiction and essays he has enjoyed a parallel career doing translation work including translations of Raymond Carver F. Scott Fitzgerald J.D. Salinger Ursula K. LeGuin and Truman Capote. His biographer and primary translator Jay Rubin notes Murakami developed a fondness for hard-boiled literature while attending high school in Kobe devouring works by Chandler Ross Macdonald and Ed McBain and Murakami himself acknowledged his debt to Chandler's influence on his novel A Wild Sheep Chase: "The structure of A Wild Sheep Chase was deeply influenced by the detective novels of Raymond Chandler. I am an avid reader of his books and have read some of them many times. I wanted to use his plot structure in my new novel. This mean first of all that the protagonist would be a lonely city dweller. He would be searching for something. In the course of his search he would become entangled in various kinds of complicated situations.
