Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece. Vignette on title page. Title in red and black lettering. Decorative head- tailpieces and initials. Originally published in 1696 "Apparatus biblicus" is a development of the author's "Introduction à la Lecture de l'Ecriture Sainte" 1689. In this work he calls in question the historical character of the Book of Tobias and the Book of Judith and maintains that even after the Council of Trent a difference of authority should be recognized between the proto-canonical and deutero-canonical books of the Bible. This work examines also subjects such as the history of the Hebrews and the Holy Land a description of the Tabernacle and Temple a history of the scriptures and a great many tangential matters like the plants animals minerals diseases and customs mentioned in the Bible. Illustrated with thirty striking copper plates including frontispiece with a folding map of the known world. This work is divided into three parts: 1 Of the Origin History and Antiquities of the Jews; 2 Of the Canon; 3 Of the False Gods together with an Explanation of Scriptural Names. Many of the plates are folded and some depict the following views: Map of the World; Noah's Ark; the Tower of Babel; Map of the Holy Land; Plan of the Ancient City of Jerusalem; the Ark of the Covenant; the Temple; the High Priest; the Great Sanhedrim; etc. Head and tail of spine chipped. Rubbing along edges of binding. Front hinge starting but front board still firmly attached. Minor to moderate age-toning/foxing to very first and very last pages. Minor worming and water-staining to upper margin of the last hundred pages not affecting text or plates. Binding in overall fair interior in good plates in very good condition. In the forewords in volume one that of the editor contains a full page portrait engraving of Lund rendered by P. Houbraken the author 's foreword contains a full page engraving of the plan of the tabernacle and its courtyard. Important and often-referenced treatise on ancient Jewish rites and symbolism the tabernacle the temple the high priests the Levites and the services of the old Hebrews written by the Lutheran pastor Johann Lund. The German edition was published posthumously in 1711 by Lund's son Thomas Lund. It is profusely illustrated with twenty-five full-page copper plate engravings four of them folding depicting the tabernacle the Arc of the Convenant the altar for sacrifices sepulchers the Temple of Solomon copper cleansing vessels the high priests and the Levites the idol Moloch receiving human sacrifices memorial charms for head and arms various plans e.g. the shape and arrangement of the bedsteads at the tabernacle among others. In addition the work is illustrated with numerous in-text copper engravings showing various essentials used in ceremonies as well as ancient coins and line drawings of architectural details. Both volumes contain registers at rear. Text in Dutch. Bindings with some wear along edges scuffing and very light fraying at corners front joint of volume one almost cracked and quarter inch chip along head and tail of spine volume two only at head. CHRIST' to spine xxiv 638 10 pp. Binding shows moderate wear with vertical cracking along the spine leather and typical rubbing and drying to the joints corners and spine ends. Interior features a contemporary prior owner's name inscribed on the front pastedown. Light-to-moderate staining and creasing to the tips of the title page and the first few preliminary leaves. A handful of scattered pages throughout show minor instances of faint staining or light foxing. Otherwise the text block remains remarkably clean bright crisp and completely unmarked. A tight well-preserved 18th-century example of Father Gonnelieu's immensely popular French translation. ~KMP~ 2.0P A French version of the spiritual classic 'Imitation of Christ' translated from the Latin by Jerome de Gonnelieu 1640-1715 a French Jesuit theologian ascetical writer and preacher. He was the author editor and translator of numerous works. The first edition of his version of The Imitation with relevant observations and prayers following each of the book's many chapters was first printed in Paris in 1712. The Imitation was written by Catholic monk Thomas Kempis circa 1380-1471 as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427 at Mount Saint Agnes monastery in the town of Windesheim located in what is now the Netherlands. He wrote these works for the instruction of novices of his Augustinian monastic order followers of Geert Groote's Brethren of the Common Life. But the writings quickly became popular among all the literate faithful. There is probably no other book apart from the Bible which has been printed in so many editions and translations.
