Magnificent illuminated manuscript version of the Rubaiyat or some verses from the Rubaiyat. The illuminated borders are singular -- their design is unlike that we are familiar with and not even vaguely similar to anything we have ever seen produced by a latter-day illuminator professional or amateur. Their tracery is of blues greens reds some yellow in a few instances and not least the all important gilt. The illuminator surely was paying homage to some Islamic and Persian illumination in her palette but overall these sources are but influences; the illuminations are far from merely imitative. The design pulls you in and as one gazes longer one will discover small figurative imagery woven into the lines and swirls of the larger ornamentation. Words are beyond us to come close to capturing their complexity and character -- our photos hopefully will impart something of that. Let us just say the colors are deep and bold. Within these extraordinary borders is the calligraphic text rendered in a stunning easily legible Gothic Fraktur script. And there are four dream-like miniature watercolors as well of scenic Persian villages. N.d. circa early 1920s. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated 14 leaves with illumination -- illumination on one side. The back side of the leaf then left blank. Tissue guards for each page with illumination. The first leaf has no text -- it is a rectangular abstract design suggestive perhaps of a spectacular rug and inspired by such illuminated painting as one finds in many an antiquarian Koran. The next leaf is the title page with the words appearing to float on the page. The lettering has a distinctive verticality and the gilt letters are both clearly the letters they are supposed to be but have an abstraction that one can imagine they are Arabic script as well. The last two leaves with a more restrained formalistic illumination has evenly spaced dome-shaped pointers as one finds in Koranic decoration to highlight important passages. The binding slipcase and chemise are functional but don't really do the contents justice. Other than some crease marks on the calf and light wear overall to these protective features the binding and slipcase present no issues. unknown

He was a Member of both the Oriental Ceramic Societies of England and of Hong Kong. He had been President of the Oriental Society of Hong Kong. He had been an honorary advisor o Oriental Art to the Hong Kong Museum of Art as well as to other museums in Hong Kong. He became Honorary Curator of the then new Museum of East Asian Art in Bath England. He has authored numerous articles on Chinese ceramics jade and bamboo carvings as well as lectured on these topics widely. The previous owner was Phil Berneburg believed to be the studio art potter with over twenty years' experience a geologist and ceramics engineer and a professor of ceramics in the Masters program at Hood College. His main interests were in creating sculptural ceramics both functional and nonfunctional and in contributing to education in the ceramic arts in particular teaching the technical background of ceramics and its importance and relationship to art pottery. His background has included just about every aspect of ceramic processing including raw materials handling ceramic body preparation shaping and forming techniques firing procedures equipment maintenance and studio and laboratory design and safety. He taught hand building and wheel techniques and the technical aspects of ceramics such as clay properties glaze chemistry and kiln technology. The only museum devoted to East Asian Art to open in England in the last 30 years the Museum of East Asian Art amasses a formidable collection of Chinese art notably ceramics jades and metalworks. This volume presents the museum's fine collection of Chinese ceramics ranging in date from the Neolithic to the Qing dynasty. The Museum of East Asian Art in Bath was founded by Brian McElney. McElney spent his entire working life practicing law in Hong Kong and it was during this time that he was drawn to East Asian and especially Chinese art. In 1958 he bought his first piece an ivory goat and kid after which Brian's collection grew to include jades ceramics scholar's studio objects and bronzes. After his retirement from law in 1983 McElney returned to England and procured the funds for the restoration and refurbishment of the Georgian building that houses the Museum founding the Museum itself in 1990. McElney donated his private collection to form the Museum which he had created as a UK educational charity opening to the public in 1993. Although the bulk of the objects come from this original donation new donations and acquisitions have been made over the years. Since opening to the public in April 1993 the Museum has become one of the most extensive collections of East Asian art outside London and it is the only museum dedicated solely to the arts and cultures of East and Southeast Asia within the UK. With a collection of almost 2000 objects ranging in date from c.5000 BCE to the present day the Museum offers its visitors an insight into the art and cultures of China Japan Korea and Southeast Asia. In his Preface Humayun Kabir outlines how he persuaded Azad ''one of the principal actors in the transfer of power from British to Indian hands'' to agree to the composition and publication of this book. At the time Azad was in ill health and died before completion. The text originally in Urdu is largely the work of Kabir constructed from conversations with Azad and overseen by the latter. The translation into English is also Kabir's.Presentation copy from Humayun Kabir inscribed by him on the front free endpaper: ''The Right Honourable Earl Attlee with kind regards from Humayun Kabir - 12th March 1961''. The recipient was of course the British Prime Minister at the time when India gained Independence and features several times in the narrative. When Attlee won the 1945 election he received a congratulatory telegram from Azad of which Nehru and Gandhi disapproved as they ''were both skeptical about the Labour attitude to India''.Spine a bit faded.
