Jocus Severus was originally published in 1617 by Count Michael Maier and is here rendered into the English tongue from the Latin text by the remarkably able translator Darius Klein. Like his work on Giordano Bruno's Cantus Circaeus this is the First English Translation. In addition to the new translation the Ouroboros Press edition of Jocus Severus distinguishes itself by employing new emblematic illustration work by Benjamin A. Vierling who in keeping with our publishing style has produced fine illustrative ornaments and a fold-out plate depicting the aviary creatures of the text. These graphic elements complement the typographical details with an effect befitting a piece of fine Renaissance book art. Michael Maier is well known in the historical milieu of alchemy due largely to his important work on alchemy and music Atalanta Fugiens yet his other works have remained obscure and unobtainable until now. An excellent biography of Maier can be found in the work of Hereward Tilton The Quest for the Phoenix: Spiritual Alchemy and Rosicrucianism in the Work of Count Michael Maier 1569-1622. In the foregoing work Tilton indicates the thrust of the Jocus Severus thus: The Jocus Severus takes the form of a court of judgment upon the bird of wisdom sacred to Pallas Athena the Owl in this instance embodying chemia as the highest science. First edition limited to 1000 copies.<br /><br />After hearing about the fall of the Aztec Empire cazonci Tangáxuan II sent emissaries to the Spanish victors. A few Spaniards went with them to Tzintzuntzan where they were presented to the ruler and gifts were exchanged. They returned with samples of gold and Cortés' interest in the Tarascan state was awakened. In 1522 a Spanish force under the leadership of Cristobal de Olid was sent into Tarascan territory and arrived at Tzintzuntzan within days. The Tarascan army numbered many thousands perhaps as many as 100000 but at the crucial moment they chose not to fight. Tangáxuan submitted to the Spanish administration but for his cooperation was allowed a large degree of autonomy. This resulted in a strange arrangement where both Cortés and Tangáxuan considered themselves rulers of Michoacán for the following years: the population of the area paid tribute to them both. When the Spanish found out that Tangáxuan was still de facto ruler of his empire but only supplied the Spanish with a small part of the resources extracted from the population they sent the ruthless conquistador Nuño de Guzmán who allied himself with a Tarascan noble Don Pedro Panza Cuinierángari and the cazonci was executed. A period of violence and turbulence began. During the next decades Tarascan puppet rulers were installed by the Spanish government but when Nuño de Guzman had been disgraced and recalled to Spain Bishop Vasco de Quiroga was sent to the area to clean up. He rapidly gained the respect and friendship of the natives who ceased hostilities towards the Spanish hegemony.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br /> Light edge wear else a near fine copy. The first to be published in over thirty years this long-awaited catalogue raisonné covers the work of Frans Post Haarlem 1612-Haarlem 1680 the first artist from the Old World to paint the landscape of the Americas on the basis of first-hand experience. Engaged by Prince Johan Maurits van Nassau as part of the Dutch West India Company's colonizing efforts in the Northeast of Brazil the young artist remained in the province of Pernambuco from 1637 to 1644. He arrived here at the age of 24 and painted the seven canvases of extraordinary quality that were the subject of a recent exhibition at the Musée du Louvre in Paris 2005. These detailed and accurate records of what the young artist saw are the first landscapes of the New World painted in situ by a trained European artist as well as outstandingly original landscape paintings. After his return to Holland Post chose the Brazilian landscape as the exclusive theme of his work for more than 30 years and over the past decades the other 148 known paintings that survive from his Dutch production have also been receiving the growing attention of collectors scholars and museums worldwide. This book presents all of the 155 autograph paintings confirmed to date along with 57 drawings and 35 prints.
