According to commentators Willems and Goldsmid, the pseudonym Angelo Corraro actually conceals Charles de Ferrare du Tot, a councilor to the king in the Parliament of Normandy in Rouen. The French version of the work was printed under a false address in Amsterdam by Daniel and Lodewijk Elzevier, from the original edition, typeset the same year in Rouen by Laurent Maurry under the pseudonym Almarigo Lorens. The mention of "translation from Italian" seems to continue the game of masks initiated by the original French edition.

A scarce late seventeenth-century martial manual on the English army line infantry formations. First printed in 1676 the work is primarily devoted to the correct battlefield positioning of pikes and muskets; detailed instruction is provided for the efficient command of personnel in order to maximise damage inflicted and minimise friendly losses. The information is presented in an efficient and remarkably accessible manner the directions for the 'exercise of the musquet' for example are arranged as a list of succinct stages easily comprehended: 'Handle you Charger / Open it with your Teeth / Charge with Powder.' Successive editions each a revision on the last accommodated advances in military technology such as the introduction of flintlock firing mechanisms and the wide-spread employment of the bayonet. This copy is paired with a reissue of the regulations for the conduct of the infantry occasioned by the onset of the Monmouth Rebellion during which the ranks of the English Army swelled in response to the threat of the deposition of James II. . One of five editions all listed by ESTC as printed in 1649 with a 1650 date with minor variations; the author argues against duties of obedience to a usurping power naturally directed against Parliament and the new Commonwealth. Authorship is unclear - an attribution to Richard Hollinworth is still held by ESTC based on a report by the contemporary Adam Martindale but is also credited to Charles Herle and DNB places it as by Edward Gee "with little doubt". The latter attribution is most commonly accepted. Small quarto 182 x 131 mm. Recent brown quarter calf gilt ornaments in compartments marbled sides vellum tips. Contemporary ownership signatures "John Bryan 3d" and "E. Bailey" to title. Selbourne Library stamps to title verso and to p. 51 small slip of paper affixed to p. 53 covering a few letters. Ivory silk satin richly decorated in a colourful floral design with goldwork metal sequins and clusters of seed pearls the text "voir nostre domine" embroidered on the front and back. Exquisitely embroidered 17th-century English binding with a colourful floral design comparable to the very few silk bindings decorated in London during the years ca. 1625-1650 that have survived. The design which is identical on both sides showcases a crowned Tudor rose with its stem in a vase surrounded by flowers foliage and ornamented leaves with the text "voir nostre domine" at the top. It has been embroidered onto a base of ivory silk satin lined with white linen and decorated with four blue painted ornaments on the interior. The work has been executed with an exquisite pallet of green blue pink red orange white brown and gold threads brilliantly contrasting the ivory white of the base fabric.All sections and shapes have been beautifully outlined with gold thread fastened with red silk. The hearts of the roses the crowns the vases and the initials V and D of the text have been decorated with small pearls. Little round sequins are scattered in the foliage filling the negative space. At the interior two pockets have been sewn intended for the insertion of a book probably a Psalter of ca. 16.5 x 10 cm or 12mo format.Some sections are a little bit faded the embroidery on the spine and around the edges is partly detached missing a few pearls and sequins and likely some goldwork the silk is slightly water stained on the interior. Otherwise an extremely rare specimen of a very richly decorated silk bookbinding in very good condition.l Cf. Bound by "Owen" in contemporary full black morocco richly gilt all over with floral and leaf motifs onlaid red and citron morocco pieces to covers and spines a.e.g. fore-ege painted with flowers and "Search the Scriptures" two working silver clasps joints beautifully repaired fore-edge painting dulled and worn from clasps some foxing throughout. Preserved in a protective cloth case. Suitable for exhibition and study. OF SIGNAL IMPORTANCE IN THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH RESTORATION BOOKBINDING: AN UNRECORDED AND UNPUBLISHED BINDING BY "OWEN" WHOSE WORK IS KNOWN FROM ONLY ONE OTHER EXAMPLE. <br /> <br /> In terms of 17th-century English bindings this one in particular is of particular significance: the only other binding by "Owen" is in the Henry Davis Gift British Library. Howard Nixon English Restoration Bookbindings p. 37 and plate 78 describes it in some detail: "It has been stated earlier that signatures on painted fore-edges followed by the word 'fecit' in the seventeenth century are those of binders or booksellers for whom the books were bound. The book in the Henry Davis Gift with the edges signed 'Owen fecit' and dated 1672 is a possible exception to this rule as Owen cannot be traced. The tools used on this book have not however been identified elsewhere." Our binding is far more elaborate the that in the Henry Davis Gift as it features a total of 26 onlays red and citron all elaborately gilt. The Davis Gift example is bound in a single piece of black goatskin. Due to the extensive and complex gold tooling the present binding was not easily attributable to a known workshop but it is now clear that all four major tools on it are identical to those on the "Owen" binding in the Davis Gift see Mirjam Foot Henry Davis Gift vol. II no. 115 with full-page reproduction. While the fore-edge of our binding is worn the word "Search the Scriptures" is just visible alongside depictions of flowers. <br /> <br /> Provenance: inscribed on recto of third blank leaf "John Pounds Carter 1864 bequeathed to him by his aunt Phoebe who died July 14th 1852." This individual was almost certainly the same JPC who was born in Southwark London in 1821 and died in Lambeth London in 1896. Tipped onto the first blank is a small handwritten note which describes this as a "very fine binding by Samuel Mearne." <br /> <br /> References: Ad 1 Bible: Darlow/Moule 539 British and Foreign Bible Society copy lacks the Psalms altogether. Wing STC 2nd ed. B2267. Not in ESTC !. Contains: A general title; The Old Testament but no separate Old Testament Title page; The New Testament With Title; Revelation ; 2 Concordances With separate title stating that these were collected by R.F.H. ; Book of Psalms Separate title state that they were collected by Thomas Sternehold & John Hopkins. Bound in full 20th century mottled calf. Plain new endpapers. 4 raised bands to spine blind decorations to compartments. Board edges patterned. Black and gilt label & titles to spine. All title pages present. Final 3 pages Psalms with very old repairs and one page inserted out of order. Psalms complete but Creed incomplete at end of book So ends at page 92. All sections dated 1608. Robert Barker. The noted issues with this copy are: f68 marked as f96; f173 with pasted down border note; f329 last of Ezekiel misbound in Daniel; f330 present but with loss of a large are of text; f434 mispaginated as f435; f435 has large ink stain to verso; f464 small closed tear; f483 torn with some loss; f490 mispaginated as f499; f534 complete but torn; Book of Psalms: 1st 10 pages unpaginated; p28 mispaginated as p27; p86 mispaginated as p66; pps 87/88 exchanged with pps 89/90; The final two leaves have been repaired and the final leaf with moderate loss to the edges. As is inevitable with a Bible of this age there are also tiny tears nicks and edgewear and a general darkening of the pages nevertheless s a very nice example. This edition of the Geneva Bible received the nickname Breeches Bible because on its erroneous translation of Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 7. The text reads: 'Then the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked and they sewed figge tree leaves together and made themselves breeches.' Each page is numbered to the recto only if at all so these are actually leaf numbers so we refer to fn. To confuse matters further the book of psalms numbers each page not leaf. Full collation: ii 1-554 1-98 1-91.pp Collation: lacks blank q1 q2-Zzz10 A-L2 A-G3. Our copy substantially conforms to Darlow & Moule 225a. The states that it is substantially a close reprint of the 1605 quarto with text ending on fo.554 as does ours for the OT and NT and with Gen. i. 3: 'Then God Sayd.' 240 by 170mm 9½ by 6¾ inches. . Cette édition de la Bible de Genève a reçu le surnom de Bible à culotte en raison de sa traduction erronée du chapitre 3 verset 7 de la Genèse. Le texte se lit comme suit : Les yeux de l'un et de l'autre s'ouvrirent et ils connurent qu'ils étaient nus. Ils cousirent ensemble des feuilles de figuier et se firent une culotte. Chaque page n'étant numérotée qu'au recto voire pas du tout il s'agit en fait de numéros de feuilles nous nous référons donc à fn. Pour compliquer encore les choses le livre des psaumes numérote chaque page et non chaque feuille. Collation complète : ii 1-554 1-98 1-91.pp Collation : manque le blanc q1 q2-Zzz10 A-L2 A-G3. Notre exemplaire est en grande partie conforme à Darlow & Moule 225a. Cette édition de la Bible de Genève a reçu le surnom de Bible à culotte, en raison de sa traduction erronée du chapitre 3, verset 7 de la Genèse. Le texte se lit comme suit : Les yeux de l'un et de l'autre s'ouvrirent, et ils connurent qu'ils étaient nus. Ils cousirent ensemble des feuilles de figuier et se firent une culotte. Chaque page n'étant numérotée qu'au recto (voire pas du tout), il s'agit en fait de numéros de feuilles (nous nous référons donc à fn). Pour compliquer encore les choses, le livre des psaumes numérote chaque page, et non chaque feuille. The learned Jesuit historian Pierre Joseph d'Orléans 1641-98 was described by Voltaire as the first historian to specialize in revolutions--he was also the author of a history of revolutions in Spain an account of the Tartar conquerors of China and a subsequent study of the English Civil War covering the years 1603-90 in depth. The present work was favorably received on both sides of the Channel: the Earl of Chatham commended it in his letters and du Fresnoy described it as a "history written with eloquence and judgment" and praised its equal treatment of Catholics and Protestants. When the present set appeared in a George Bayntun catalogue the bindings were described as "very handsome" and "almost identical to the set of Bertrand De Moleville's 'Histoire de la Révolution de France' 1801-1803 bound by Bozerian" and also from the library of Baron de Mackau 1832-1918 a member of the Chamber of Deputies for 42 years and a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. The volumes are unusual in their combination of calf boards with contrasting morocco spines and their gilt decoration is particularly lovely. François Bozerian generally called "Bozerian le jeune" was active in Paris from the turn of the 19th century until 1818 and for much of that time he worked with his elder brother Jean-Claude. The Bozerian binderies produced many fine books praised today especially for their technical achievement and elegance of design. The first edition of this work is surprisingly rare in the marketplace: RBH and ABPC record only one other copy at auction since at least 1975. Chez Claude Barbin unknown

The Genealogies which accompany this book have a similar typographical history to that of the King James Bible itself. John Speed was granted a patent in 1610 for ten years to issue and insert his Genealogies and double-page general map engraved by Elstrack in every edition of this Bible. ìThe King James Bible or the Authorized Version as it is now commonly but not strictly accurately known was the outcome of the conference summoned at Hampton Court by the King in January 1604 in an attempt to settle the quarrels in the Church of England arising from the Puritan zeal of some of its members. It was the leader of the Puritan party John Reynolds the President of Corpus Christi College Oxford who first suggested the idea of a new translation.It has been described as ëthe only literary masterpiece ever to have been produced by a committeeà and was the work of nearly fifty translators organized in six groups.Being based on a wider range of classical and oriental scholarship than its predecessors the Authorized Version was a more learned text.No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the influence of the Authorized Version may best be described in the words of G.M.
