1830636New York 1830. Very good. Broadside form approximately 12.5 x 8.25 inches. Formerly mounted with some adhesive remnants at top edge. Light creasing at lower edge. Faint foxing. A subscription form for the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company which sought to attract colonists to land granted to Lorenzo de Zavala Joseph Vehlein and David G. Burnet in southeast Texas in the early 1830s. The present form is completed for one of the principal land owners in the scheme Lorenzo de Zavala and is signed by him on the verso. Zavala went on to play a major role in the Texas Revolution and became the first Vice President of the Republic of Texas. "The Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company was founded in New York on October 16 1830 for the purpose of colonizing the lands assigned to the empresarios Joseph Vehlein David G. Burnet and Lorenzo de Zavala. The colonization contracts covered an area in East Texas lying east of the San Jacinto River and south of a line running twenty leagues north of Nacogdoches 3743163 acres. The company a real-estate promotion firm with agents land counselors surveyors and salesmen did not own land itself but sold scrip that allowed the settlers simply to move into the area allotted to the three empresarios. There the settlers had to complete all requirements of the Mexican colonization law before they could obtain title to land" - Texas State Handbook Online. "The certificate lists by date the four grants there were two grants to Vehlein to the three empresarios and gives the boundaries of the resulting tract. At the end is a provision that the location of the land is to be under the supervision of the agent 'residing on the land' of the Trustees who on surrender of the scrip reports to the Commissioner appointed by the Government who issues titles 'Subject to the payments required by the Laws of the State'" - Streeter. This is the most famous 19th c. work on Central America and a very important regional history by an anti-clerical and liberal historian Lorenzo Montufar y Rivera Maestre 1823-1898 who as foreign minister of Costa Rica helped organize the Central American defense against William Walker and was frequently exiled for his opposition to the dictator Rafael Carrera. Bancroft and many other historians relied very heavily on Montufar's work and thus his subsequent influence on both English and Spanish language histories has been quite substantial. 18267538Mexico City: Mariano Galvez Rivera 1826. First edition. Quarto size pp 8 276 8. A history of Texcoco a city built by the Acolhuas a pre-Columbian people of the Náhuatl-speaking group of tribes and once the chief seat of Aztec culture. There is much information on the legendary past and particularly the great king of Texcoco Netzahualcoyotl. It appears that the text is basically that of Veytia based on notes and other material of Boturini with some editorial additions by Bustamante. Boturini 1702-51 educated in Milan and Vienna arrived in Mexico in 1736. Fired with the intention of writing a history of pre-Conquest Mexico he assembled a collection of mss in Náhuatl and Spanish now principally preserved in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris which has never been equalled. Returning to Europe in 1744 Boturini worked on his Idea de una nueva historia general de la América Septentrional fundada sobre material copioso de figuras symbolos caracterer y jeroglÃficos cantares y manuscritos de autores indios ultimamente descubiertos Madrid 1746 which is an inventory of pictorial texts of Spanish-Indian history. In that work he was assisted by Mariano Fernández de EcheverrÃa y Veytia. Veytia 1718 - 80 a native of Puebla was one of the great historians of pre-conquest Mexico of his day along with Clavigero and wrote on that subject as well as a history of his "querida" Puebla. He was a close friend of Boturini whose work in Mexico inspired his own studies. Carlos MarÃa de Bustamante 1774-1848 Mexican patriot politician journalist and pamphleteer was one of the intellectuals of the Insurrection movement. As well as recovering pre-Columbian and colonial mss Bustamante produced a number of historical works the most important of which is his Cuadro histórico de la revolución de la América mexicana 1823-32 which covers the period 1808-21. Ownership inscription on title-page: "Mexico 28 May 1834 J. H. Fritsch". Sabin 6835: Palau 33791. Some copies apparently have a folded map of the lake Texcoco - this copy does not and follows Palau's and Sabin's collation in that respect: further no plates or maps are called for in the index and no copies at auction indicate a map or plates. 1860395Delmonico Lorenzo. <i>Ball in Honor of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. New York October 12 1860. </i>New York: Delmonico's printed by Spear 1860. A menu printed on silk for a banquet given in honor of Albert Edward Prince of Wales later to be crowned King Edward VII called 'the event of the age' by the <i>Commercial Advertiser</i>. Held at New York's Academy of Music this ball required Lorenzo Delmonico to display all his culinary talents. Lorenzo Delmonico did not disappoint. "With pink and white drapery the rooms of the medical college had been transformed into exotic tents. On the buffet tables the magnificently presented dishes with their elegant-sounding French names were presented by Lorenzo Delmonico the owner of Manhattan's best restaurant." Printed on beige-colored silk with brown type this very fragile surviving menu measures 17 cm x 11 cm having been trimmed slightly from its original size. There are a few places on the upper left side where the silk has broken and there is slight loss of fabric but no loss of text. See: Ian Radforth <i>Royal Spectacle. S. Lincoln April 4th 1839" 7 1 24 pages blanks completed in autograph ink. Illus. A relatively early and extensive phrenological reading from the hand of one of the great Fowler brothers himself; besides the descriptive analysis in manuscript the numerical measurements of the various traits are given in autograph ink in the margin of the printed pamphlet. Despite the Philadelphia Phrenological Athenaeum imprint to the printed chart the reading may likely have been delivered at the Fowler New York studio where Lorenzo had first established his business. Original brown cloth with chipping and tears to spine cloth. Spine cracked at pp 174/175; intermittent foxing primarily affecting the title page occasional text margins and about 20 plates mainly mammals birds reptiles and botanicals as opposed to the views which are generally clean. Map has a few splits at the intersections and one closed tear that has been repaired on the verso. This was the final expedition made by the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers in connection with the Mexican War. In addition to Sitgreaves the expedition party included J.G. Parke Richard H. Kern as draughtsman S.W. Woodhouse as physician and naturalist and Antoine Leroux as guide. Its purpose was to determine whether the Zuni River actually emptied into the Colorado and to examine the territory en route. The party followed the Zuni from Zuni Pueblo in western New Mexico to the Little Colorado then continued west reaching the Colorado near the Mojave villages and then proceeding south to Camp Yuma and San Diego. Chemical Manipulations is intended as a manual for use in the laboratory and covers much ground containing a brief summary of the Principles of Chemistry and Chemical Analysis and part II contains the Special Analyses prescribed in the Programme of Instruction. Instruction in photography reviews various processes both theoretical and practical and contains useful "short examples" where there is a stated problem with printing for instance and possible reasons and solutions are presented. A scarce survival from Lorenzo Snow's trial in the U.S. Supreme Court for polygamy under the Edmunds Act where two of his three convictions were eventually overturned as the court determined that the offense was continuous and therefore only warranted a single conviction. George Ticknor Curtis defended Snow and published this edition of his speech himself. Curtis argued that Snow had lived continuously with one woman and defended his right to have multiple "wives" as a matter of religious freedom. Sherwood and his National Cheap Freight Railway League seek "to lessen the cost of transportation" by breaking up "the monopoly system" and pattern of "exclusive privilege" that have oppressed small business and farmers and by opening the railway network "to free competition in transportation." They also support government subsidies for "a railroad to unite the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile and Pensacola with the lakes at Cleveland and Chicago." The League's membership roster which includes many members of Congress is printed. The pamphlet includes a Letter from the League to the organizers of a mass meeting of the 'Cheap-Freight Railway League' in Houston and prints various endorsements of the League's goals. 183755228Providence: November 22 1837. 4to previous folds small break at the wax seal; very good. The Reverend Lorenzo D. Johnson writes to Hon. Job Durfee stating that the Roger Williams Church Corporation will attempt to raise funds because of "having had a debt standing against them for some time." To raise funds they "have adopted the following method.to give a course of Scientific lectures to be delivered in the house in the western margin of the city.called Christian Hill." Johnson asks Durfee to speak on behalf of the church and mentions that he has already obtained the services of Mr. Upham of Salem Hon. Tristam Burges and a few others. Lorenzo Dow Johnson was born in 1805 in Wethersfield Vermont. A Reformed Methodist preacher he lived in Plymouth County Massachusetts but served at a number of different churches in New England including The Roger Williams Church in Providence. Rev. Johnson married in 1832 in Rochester Massachusetts Mary Burges daughter of Abraham Burges and the niece of Tristam Burges afterwards member of Congress from Rhode Island and professor in Brown University. He was the author of a number of books including a biography The Spirit of Roger Williams: with a Portrait of One of His Descendants. There is evidence that he was installed as pastor in the Roger Williams Baptist Church Society in 1827 cf. Cheney Rev. Martin. A sermon delivered at the installation of the Rev. Lorenzo D. Johnson as Pastor of the Roger Williams Baptist Church Society in Providence Oct. 25 1827 although this is interesting since his biographers call him a Methodist. This church united with the Quakers in 1837. After traveling in Europe he was in the clerical employ of the Government from about 1851 until the second battle of Bull Run and there being an urgent need for assistance for the wounded he went to the front and from that time to the close of the war devoted himself to the care of the sick and wounded in and about Washington. Job Durfee 1790 -1847 was a politician and jurist from Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown University in 1813 and was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Tiverton. He was a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1816 to 1820 and was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Seventeenth Congress. In 1833 he was elected associate justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court. As chief justice he presided over the trial of the last person executed in Rhode Island John Gordon. Durfee was the author of What Cheer a Poem in Nine Cantos; and of an oration The Influences of Scientific Discovery and Invention on Social and Political Progress or Roger Williams in Exile 1843. <br/><br/> November 22 unknown books
