Overall a nice complete copy of an important piece of Western American history. Following the Mexican Cession of 1848 there was strong interest in mapping the United States' newly acquired territory. In 1851 Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves a U. S. Army officer in the Corps of Topographical Engineers led a scientific and military mission to explore the area's largest rivers and determine their navigability. The party of more than 50 people set out from Zuni Pueblo in northern New Mexico traveled west across Arizona and then followed the Colorado River south to California. This report to the U. S. Senate recounts the treacherous journey interactions with Native Americans and describes the various flora and fauna they encountered. The detailed and largely accurate map that the expedition produced is the report's most notable feature. Wagner-Camp 230: 1. Howes S-521.; Book; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; 198 pp .
