Old leather boards binding; needs rebacking. The pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe is attributed to Longus a third century A.D. Greek poet. Idyllic in nature the poem tells the charming story of the love of a goat herd and a shepherdess. Daphnis and Chloe was widely popular in France and England in the 17th and 18th century. This text was translated from the Greek by Jacques Amyot 1513-1593. An anonymous mid-eighteenth-century English translation of the only extant work of inconspicuous second-century Hellenistic author Longus. The novel considered the first pastoral prose narrative concerns two foundlings raised by shepherds who fall in love. They are later kidnapped and separated but ultimately reunited. Daphnis and Chloe is distinguished by its singular exploration of eroticism; concertedly focused on the physical aspects of romantic relationships with particular comments on masochism and rape.
