Maillol Aristide. Full white vellum boards with gilt lettering on the spine in a personalized white slipcase that says "for Marion; from Ted 1938." 211 pp. unopened and untrimmed pages; richly illustrated; signature of Maillol in pencil on the final engraved page. Signature page reads "Aristide Maillol engraved with his own hand the wood-cuts which illustrated this book. The text is that of Thornley's translation of 1657 revised and augmented. Philippe Gonin of Paris undertook the achievement of this work and printed it on his hand-press for A. Zwemmer London." Extremely rare. 1937017038London: A Zwemmer 1937. First Thus. . Hardcover. Good. First thus limited edition this being no 54 of 250 full vellum with simple gilt titling to spine laced-in ties to joints. Printed on hand-made paper "manufactured by an old process rediscovered by Aristide Maillol". Simple stiff card slipcase. 20.5 13.5cm vi 211p 1 collophon. This copy has been signed by Aristide Maillol to the limitation page. Additionally this copy belonged to Belgian artist and writer E L T Mesens and given to him by Anton Zwemmer with a warm personal inscription to the ffep "Pour mon vieux copain Edward Mesens en toute sympathie A Zwemmer May 28 1946". In 1937 Zwemmer and Roland Penrose bought the London Gallery and Mesens was appointed the gallery's director. Under Mesens' directorship and with Zwemmer's financial backing it became the centrepoint for Surrealism in England with exhibitions of Joan Miro and Picasso both in the gallery and in Zwemmer's shop. A Greek pastoral poem ascribed to Sophist Longus 4th or 5th century AD which tells the story of the tender love of Daphnis and Chloe the children of a goatherd and a shepherd. This being the George Thornley translation of 1657. This copy with 52 illustrations by Maillol title page vignette fifty within the text and one to the collophon printed by Philippe Gonin of Paris. Condition: There is surface fading to the upper board's vellum but otherwise this copy remains in very good solid condition. The pages are clean and the inner binding is secure. The slipcase has slightly dusty edges but is in solid shape. <br/> <br/> A Zwemmer hardcover

This is the publisher's copy accompanied by 6 autograph letters from Maillol to the publisher discussin varuious aspects of the making of the book. As with all his books Maillol was closely involved in all aspects of production and the result is an extremely pleasing work "perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books" Garvey. This is copy number 1 of 25 hors commerce copies on large paper containing a double suite of the plates one in black and white and one in sanguine. It is also accompanied by a somewhat foxed example of the wedding invitation which Maillol printed for Gonin and a letter from Gonin to the original purchaser of this copy. According to Eleanor Garvey "The Artist and the Book" p. 122 this work is "perhaps the most harmonious of Maillol's illustrated books."<br /> An ancient Greek novel written during the Roman Empire the only known work of the 2nd century CE Greek novelist and romance writer Longus translated by George Thornley in 1657 the story of Daphnis and Chloe inspired the French-Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol 1861-1944 to create an extensive set of sometimes mischievous woodcuts of nymphs and lovers using the same classical lines that typify his sculpture. The format of the book is particularly suited "to the black and white balance of the decorated page" François Chapon. The images the luscious hand-made paper the sensual tone of the engravings all contribute to this piquant book meant to educate and titillate the "young beauties" to whom the book is dedicated. The Epistle Dedicatory reads "To Young Beauties". 'Anne Rees-Mogg was born in 1924 and died in 1984. She studied at Bristol Art School and Central School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an inspiring and dedicated teacher herself at the Regent Street Polytechnic from 1951 and Chelsea School of Art from 1964 to 1984. She was a committed advocate of artists filmmaking and was Chair and Director of the London Film-makers Co-operative between 1981 1984'. She is recorded as having illustrated two books one in 1941 and this one in 1948. Both appear to be student pieces and are likely to have been produced in very small quantities. Printed dedication 'to Elizabeth & Peter on the occasion of their Wedding 17th April 1948' which has an ink handwritten inscription alongside it 'With love from Andy'. Purchased from the family of Elizabeth and Peter longtime neighbours of the R-Ms who informed me that Andy was a nickname for Anne. A good copy in the original buff paper wrappers with an onlaid etched plate to the front wrap. Some minor wear to wrappers contents clean and sound. 24 pages 8 illustrations by A.R-M.
