Il réunit dans la maison, toujours existante, une «importante bibliothèque», que Charles Morton put encore examiner vers 1930 chez ses descendants (Charles Morton: Anciens ex-libris héraldiques vaudois, no 87). Written by Francois Fenelon while he was tutor of Louis Duke of Burgundy. The work served as a didactic tool for the future ruler the young ‘Fils de France’ as well as a not-so-subtle critique of absolute monarchy and King Louis XIV. Literary historian Jean-Claude Bonnet is quoted as stating that the Avantures is “the true key to the museum of the eighteenth century imagination;†an instant bestseller Telemaque went through numerous editions. Text in French. Two volumes in one; additional title page for Tome II; pagination and collation reset. Title pages in black and red; with seventeen engraved plates throughout. Marbled endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with woodcut initials and headpieces. The Estienne imprint preceedes this imprint this imprint is without the pagination error seen in the Estienne issue. Encyclopedia Britannica "François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon: French archbishop and writer". Fenelon is perhaps most famous for his treatise on the education of girls published at the end of the seventeenth century. His Dialogues on Eloquence was composed around this same time and was published after his death. Fenelon's pedagogical writings were hugely influential in his day and remained so for decades afterward. This work in particular focuses on public speaking in a church or other religious setting. Dialogue between A B and C on the nature of eloquence A having the role of Socrates and employing maieutics B and C responding to A's questions. The characters discuss a sermon they have just heard and from there define the qualities of true eloquence by drawing these from examples of the Ancients. Fénelon criticizes both Ancients and Moderns giving preference to the eloquence of Holy Scripture. Du Cerceau's essay attempts to characterize French poetry and what makes verse specific in relation to prose.
