FOR THE SON OF A KING<br /> <br /> Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon was a French Catholic archbishop a man of tolerance living during a period of great strife between Protestants and Catholics. He was opposed by the church and state for his liberal views on education and mystical prayer. Nevertheless he was summoned to tutor the unruly grandson and heir of Louis XIV who he wrote Telemachus for in 1699. Originally anonymously published the story follows Telemachus's instruction as Odysseus' heir and rebuked Louis XIV's autocratic regime encouraging his heir to value qualities like brotherhood altruism and parliamentary systems.<br /> <br /> The Adventures of Telemachus saw roaring success in England throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and was frequently given to young boys as part of their education ending up in the hands of thinkers like Rousseau and Montesquieu. This edition came as one of many bilingual issues released during this fervor including a discourse on epic poetry. <br /> <br /> This ornate copy is bound in beautiful tree calf and has marbled edges and endpapers. First published anonymously in France in 1699 and first translated by Hawkesworth in 1768 Fenelon's didactic novel fills in a missing part of the plot of Homer's 'Odyssey' recounting the educational adventures of Telemachus the son of Ulysses as he is accompanied by his tutor the goddess Minerva in disguise.The novel proved unpopular with the French royalty upon its publication as Louis XIV believed that it criticised his reign which at the time was rife with war taxes and famine of the peasantry.With an engraved frontispiece and title page and numerous vignette illustrations throughout. The portrait frontispiece has been neatly hand-coloured by a prior owner.Undated; dated 1941 via Jisc.With eight pages of advertisements to the rear.A scarce edition of this mythological tale. We have been unable to find out anything about Maria Bradburn probably because this is such a scarce work. There are no copies recorded in OCLC. OCLC also lists no other books in which Maria Bradburn had any part. Original blue paneled calf tooled elaborately in blind gilt-lettered spine. . Octavo. Binding extremities a bit worn and toned. Crude repair to upper title-page. Occasional light offsetting very minor foxing to endpapers and gutter margins. Scattered light pencil marginalia. Small tear to lower corner of pp. 87-88. A very good copy clean and free of browning. François Fénelon 1651-1715 is best known as the author of The Adventures of Telemachus 1699 regarding the educational travels of the son of Ulysses. It influenced the educational theories of Rousseau. In 1681 he published Traité de l'éducation des filles Treatise on the Education of Girls the first systematic work on female education.
