As issued sewn in marbled paper wrappers with a printed paper title label on the front wrapper. A bit of sunning to the front wrapper near the spine; contents clean. Wonderful descriptions of the 6 Mexican and 1 Peruvian 16th century imprints. This copy from the reference library of Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts with book plate inside the front wrapper. A firm of long standing and excellent repute Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts was noted for their emphasis in early books and Latin American imprints. The proprietors issued an important contribution to early American printing: 39 Books and Broadsides Printed in America before the Bay Psalms Book. Never before in England has a catalogue of Spanish books of such varied interest been offered for sale or compiled within the covers of any one publication.". Includes inter alios: ".a remarkable collection of the various editions of Quixote. including the first edition in addition to the Novelas Exemplares and other works by Cervantes and translations into other languages." Notable also as the thickest ever catalogue issued by Maggs partly because of the cataloguing approach taken by Sarah de Laredo - Clifford Maggs observed that "with a superb disregard of commercial value Miss de Laredo would do as long a note amounting often to an essay for a book worth two or three guineas as for one valued at several hundred". Containing selections from books manuscripts and engravings that are remarkable for their 'rarity interest and beauty'.Containing information and either illustrated plates or facsimile's of pages from 204 items listed in the 'Indices to Authors and Titles' at the starts of the work. Items are further helpfully catalogued by subject including law Romances of Chivalry and Woodcut and Illustrated books. Information such as the locations of these works and their estimated value is also provided.Featuring reproductions of autographed letters from Robert Louis Stevenson and Elizabeth Barret Browning and plates from such work as Pedro de Medina's 'Regimiento de Navegacion' of 1563 and Filippo Morghen's 'Raccolta' c1780 many of which are printed in two colours.
