The full edition was 225 copies 200 of which were numbered and 20 marked hors commerce both without the additional signed print. Malraux winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature provided the text based on a previously unpublished manuscript from 1939 about his experiences in the Spanish Civil War. Chagall executed the etchings with the plates destroyed after printing. Folio. With 16 full-page etchings with aquatint by Chagall 2 double page. Sheet size: 44 x 33 cm. Text in French. Original Rives wove paper wrappers lettering to front cover in black pages printed on Rives wove paper with deckled edges and publisher's watermark. 194932664Paris: Albert Skira 1949. Masson André. Original wrappers as issued in chemise and slipcase. Folio 15-1/2 x 11 inches. 223 pp. 33 aquatint etchings printed by Roger Lacourière. From a total edition of 165 this is one of the first 25 copies which were printed on Marais paper and include an original wash drawing. This copy contains the drawing for the frontispiece arguably the best in the book. There are two extra suites of the illustrations one in color on Montval the other in black on Ingres from a total edition of 150 copies signed on the colophon by author illustrator and publisher. In addition four proofs on a variant paper are specially signed by Masson. From the collection of Lawrence Saphire with a note laid in concerning the extra plates. Reva Castleman approvingly quotes Daniel Kahnweiler who called this "among the most beautiful books of our times". Masson's aquatints "erupt throughout the text like the flickering of film that intermittently slides off its sprockets a fitting commentary on the literary form Malraux had devised under the influence of the Russian director Sergei Eisenstein's cinematic style" Castleman A Century of Artists Books New York 1994. p.31 130. This image is one of the 33 aquatints created to illustrate Les Conquerants The Conquerors a novel about civil unrest in China by André Malraux first published in Paris in 1928.<br /> <br /> Swiss publisher Skira who wanted to produce publications in “the tradition of the ‘great illustrated books’†commissioned Masson in 1947 to illustrate Andre Malraux’s novel. Prior to this commission Masson had recently returned from Atelier 17 in New York after studying printmaking techniques with Stanley Hayter Brit. 1901-1988 who originally had his studio in Paris prior to WWII. Masson’s aquatints for Les Conquerants are considered to be technically complex using gradations of only one colour along with black. Limited edition in 112 copies of which this one is one of the 90 copies in Hollande Van Gelder paper signed by Leger and Malraux on justification page. Lunes en Papier Andre Malraux surrealist tale illustrated by Fernand Leger with 7 woodcuts in black of which one in cover 3 in full page and 3 in text. Lunes en papier was Malraux's first book and Leger's first book with original prints featuring his first woodcuts. Malraux presents his surrealist story on the title page of its published first book as: "A small book where we find the account of some struggles little known to men as well as that of a journey among familiar but strange objects all according to the truth and decorated with wood engravings also very true by Fernand Leger." Bound in a superb colorful artistic binder in calf and Morocco by Renee Haas that reinterprets one of Leger's woodcuts in the book executed by Renaud Vernier and Claude Ribal stamp-signed and dated 2000. Their correspondence seems to reveal that in the 1970s the elderly writer was hunting around the world with his last companion Sophie de Vilmorin for works for their collection. He ends with the now famous observation "par ailleurs le cinéma est une industrie" concluding that the cinema is an industry. Slight sunning to spine. With a precious signed autograph inscription from André Malraux to his friend the prominent Gaullist resistance fighter Brigitte Friang: Pour Brigitte. A. Malraux. Oct 1948. accompanied by an original coloured drawing depicting the famous ""dyable"" walking in profile sketched in red and blue pencil used for the eye and bristling hair Brigitte Friang joined the Resistance at the age of 19 and quickly became a key operative in charge of coordinating parachute drops in the western region. She was arrested by the Gestapo after attempting to help her friend Pierre Brossolette escape from Rennes prison. She later confessed: I knew all the landing and drop zones I knew the real names of many agents because I had transmitted them in code to London for registration. Seriously wounded she was deported to Ravensbrück then to the Sudeten commando camps. She managed to escape from the transport heading to Dachau by hiding in straw. In 1946 she co-founded the Rassemblement du Peuple Français in support of De Gaulles return to power after his resignation and became part of the small circle of close associatesalongside André Malrauxwho drafted the foundational Strasbourg speech in 1947. Following the dissolution of the R.P.F. she turned to frontline journalism covering the wars in Indochina Suez the Six-Day War and Vietnam and later became André Malrauxs press officer. This marked the beginning of a long friendship with Malraux who spoke of their closeness in Antimémoires referring affectionately to his Brigitte. In return Brigitte Friang would recount their thirty-year friendship in two works Un autre Malraux and Petit tour autour de Malraux both offering a poignant yet candid portrait of the writer and statesman. One leaf headed by the Ministre d'Etat chargé des Affaires Culturelles Ministry of Culture bearing a stamp from 29 January 1969. André Malraux hopes to place choreographer Maurice Béjart in charge of the Ballet de l'Opéra in Paris. Béjart was at the time very well established in Brussels as part of his troop Ballet du XXe siècle performing at the Théâtre de la Monnaie led by his friend Maurice Huismans. Following a report by Jean Vilar to reform the Opéra in Paris Malraux takes the decision to call Béjart back to France: “J'aimerais que nous puissions nous rencontrer pour parler d'un projet que vous connaissez déjà et auquel j'attache une grande importance : la Direction de la Danse à l'Opéra” “I would like us to be able to meet to talk about a project that you already know and to which I attach a great significance: the Management of Dance at the Opéra.” Malraux's idea was to name Boulez and Jean Vilar alongside him thus forming a solid avant-garde resolutely oriented towards the future of the arts. The choreographer declined the offer and continued his creations in Belgium. He becomes no less an admirer of Malraux to whom he will dedicate fifteen years later a ballet using Beethoven's music which he entitled “Malraux ou la métamorphose des dieux.” This letter is the only testimony existing to Malraux's request to the choreographer which remained controversial. This nomination was not accepted by Béjart who stayed in Belgium for ten years before heading to Lausanne.  Provenance: Maurice Béjart's personal archives. unknown
