Mann 1796-1859; member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts 1848-1853 known as the father of American public education won John Quincy Adams's seat in Congress after he died and served for five years as an anti-slavery advocate; this speech reaffirms his opposition and excoriates the political efforts at the time to silence those in both houses of Congress who supported his views especially those concerning the extension of slavery into the western territories. The "Commonwealth" was a Boston newspaper published 1851-1853 see AAS online catalogue. LCP/HSP Afro-Americana 6316 and 6321 for pamphlet printings only. No printing in Work or Blockson catalogue. OCLC locates two copies of this broadsheet in separate entries New York Historical Society Texas-Austin and a goodly number of copies from several pamphlet printings. Horace Mann inscriptions are uncommon and this is a superb association. “Charles Sumner January 6 1811 – March 11 1874 was an American politician and senator from Massachusetts. As an academic lawyer and a powerful orator Sumner was the leader of the antislavery forces in Massachusetts and a leader of the Radical Republicans in the United States Senate during the American Civil War working to destroy the Confederacy free all the slaves and keep on good terms with Europe. During Reconstruction he fought to minimize the power of the ex-Confederates and guarantee equal rights to the freedmen.†Mary Chapman was involved with the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society and was a friend of poet Julia Ward Howe and close friend of Charles Sumner and Horace Mann. Tax estimate for Smithfield residents with four columns following each name showing the numbers of acres owned the amount owed per acre real and personal property. The last page shows an estimated income to the town of $1863076. The names are arranged alphabetically but not in perfect alpha order. Occasional detail on familial relationships are given such as "Arnold Abigail daughter of Ezekiel" and Aldrich George son of Simon deceased" and sometime a geographical detail: Aldrich Duty B. of Cumberland." Businesses are also listed: "Angell Nathan Paper Mill and Allen William of Pawtucket Mass. for 1/4 of Thread Mill at Central Falls" Pawtucket did not become part of Rhode Island until 1862. The last page lists Mark Aldrich Stephen Steere James Dennis Spencer Mowry George Aldrich 3rd and Asa Winsor as the tax accessors for the town. <br/><br/> unknown books

Cameron Mann 1851 - 1932 was an author Episcopal priest the Third Bishop of North Dakota and the First Bishop of South Florida. The Theta Delta Chi Society was founded as a social fraternity in 1847 at Union College New York. Byy the last quarter of the 19th century the society spread rapidly adding charges a term used by TDX brothers to refer to their local organizations rather than the more-commonly used "chapters" throughout the entire country including Stanford Berkeley Brown Tufts UVA Dartmouth Yale etc. The historical poem related to the Civil War was written and delivered by Mann at the closing of the 27th Annual Convention of Theta Delta Chi at a grand banquet at Delmonico's in New York. The illustrations designed by Franklin Burdge combined typography and beautiful unique wood-engraved illustrations to represent the Greek letters by which the charge was known. According to a "Notice to Graduates" at the end of the booklet the engravings were included "partly in order that by an inspection of the wood cuts inserted they may judge of the character of the new Catalog of the Society and have their attention called to the fact that more subscriptions are needed to print it." Many pages are browned at periphery some foxing and staining. Owner's embossed stamp at foot of front free endpaper of Ira M. Rutkow M.D. noted bibliographer of military history. The author was an Army surgeon during the American Revolution and also served during the War of 1812. According to Rutkow GS4 this is probably the best and most vivid picture of early 19th century American military life.
