Goethes Beitrag führt obigen Titel am Kopf der betreffenden Seiten. In er Inhaltzsangabe sowohl wie des Bnades S.IV heißt dier so: Ueber deutsche und indische Stahlbereitung von v.Goethe bzw. Göthe. Er bildet einen Teil der Abhandlung: Über die Pflanzenkohle und die metallische Grundlagen derselben vom Prof. DOEBEREINER pp.82-104. Der Professor Böbereiner leitet die Stelle mit folgenden Worten ein: Ich habe meine diesen Gegenstand betreffende Beobachtungen vor anderhalb Jahren Herrn Staats-Minister von Geothe mitgetheilt. Dieser allverehrte große Mann theilte mir hierauf in folgendem Schreiben nachstehende interessante Bemerkung Chardin's über die indische Stahlbereitung mit." Es handelt sich im einen Brief Geotehs vom 29.April 1815 in dem dieser eine Textstelle beisteuert aus: "Jean de Chardin Voyage en Perse et autres lieux de l'orient etc. Nouv. et augm. Amsterdam 1795. Tomme III S.29. Goethe vermutet daß der indische Stahl wie der deutsche von Siegen und Dillenburg eine Beimischung von Braunstein hat. Goethes Beitrag aufgenmommen in W.A.IV 25 S.287/288 u. 305 DEn durch Goethes Farbenlehre angeregten anonymen Aufsatz "Ueber physiologe Geischts- und Farben Erscheinungen" gab "versehen mit einem anonymen Nachwort aus Goethes Feder Goethe heraus. das Nachwort auf S. 157 mit den Worten: Vorstehender Aufsatz war schon im November 1814 geschrieben sdann zu Prüfung Freunden und Forschern mitgetheilt und obgleich der Verfasser seit der Zeit neue Bemerkungen . Diese Stelle aufgenommen in W.A. II 5.Bd. 2.Abt. S.389. Hierüber siehe im besonderen im: Briefwechselzwischen Goethe u. Staatsrath Schultz herausgegeben von H.Düntzer Leipzig 1853. Der Aufsatz erschien auf Schultz' Wunsch anonym da er als vorläufige Mitteilung gedacht war Schultzan Goethe 23.Febr. 1816. Giete beförderte ihn im Mai 1816 zum Abdruck an obiges Journal das zur Zeit währen der Reise -Abwesenheits Schweigers von Döbereiner in Jena redigiert wurde Goethe an Schultz 11.März u. 25.Mai 1816; an K.Fr.Zelter 21.Mai. 1816. "Ich habe für dessen möglichste Correctheit gesorgt und gegen Schluß zu eine Stelle verändert und statt "auf den Würfeln" - "beym Würfeln" - gesetzt An Schultz 25.Mai 1816. With an engraved frontispiece and title page. 1 1 blank 556 pp. First edition of Goethe's lyrical poems inspired by the work of the great Persian poet Hafez ca. 1325-1390. The work was intended to enact a dialogue between Eastern and Western poetry but also captures Goethe's feelings for the Austrian dancer Marianne von Willemer 1784-1860 who wrote some of the poems. It is the most famous interaction with Eastern poetry in German Romantic literature and includes some of the best poems of Goethe's later years.The present work is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1749-1832 last great cycle of poetry. He became inspired for it after reading Joseph von Hammer's translation of Hafez's Divan collection in 1814. Goethe's work is divided in twelve books which are each centred around a different theme like Usch Nameh the book of love Mathal Nameh the book of parables and Hafis Nameh the book of Hafez. Together they describe Goethe's fictitious journey to the East. The work starts as a lyrical discussion between Goethe and Hafez but later expands to encompass East and West. The second half of the work contains Goethe's explanatory essay on his oriental studies which he undertook in preparation for the present work.The present edition is the second printing of the first edition which can be recognised by printing mistakes in the pagination and corrections on page 7 and 9. A second enlarged edition was published in 1827.With a contemporary ownership inscription on the back of the frontispiece and the bookplate of H.A. Knofe loosely inserted. The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed and the corners are slightly bumped. The work is slightly foxed throughout pages 495 and 496 have been omitted in the pagination and page numbers 399 and 400 have been used twice which are printing mistakes as there are no missing leaves. Housed in a slipcase. Withbound in the back are pp. 7-10 the corrected pages from the second issue. <br/><br/><em>A very fine copy of the first edition first issue of Goetheâ€™s celebrated cycle of lyrical poems inspired by the works of the great Persian poet Hafez. Goethe himself was no revolutionary â€“ far from it â€“ and yet his book had the effect of capsizing conventional nineteenth-century conceptions of poetry. It represented nothing less than a decisive reconfiguration of poetry.â€ â€¦ By 1814 five years before the publication of the Divan Goethe had come upon the poems of Hafiz in the translation of Joseph von Hammer later von Hammer-Purgstall a prolific Orientalist who had rendered the complete Divan of the Persian poet into German. The word divan diwan in Arabic is itself of Persian origin; originally it meant a kind of register a record. The word has passed into European languages to designate border and customs controls e.g. douane in French or dogana in Italian. An early Arab philologist could state that â€˜poetry is the diwan of the Arabsâ€™. By that he meant that the poems of the pre-Islamic Arabs with their very specific mentions of places and of tribes of battles and skirmishes of blood-feuds and clan rivalries served as a record of events that would otherwise have been lost. â€¦ But the word divan also came to designate the collected works of a poet. And it is in conscious imitation of his beloved afi that Goethe chose to use the word Divan for his own collection. Even so there is a crucial distinction to be noted. Goethe calls his own collection the West-Ã¶stlicher Divan the West-Eastern Divan.
