A poem under the heading "Wanted A Wife" has been cut out from page 184 with loss of text to Mary Davenant's story on the verso. Several page corners are creased and there is some occasional soiling and faint minor spots of foxing. <p>The first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's "A Tale of the Ragged Mountains" a story which combines mesmerism and reincarnation set near the University of Virginia where Poe had been a student in 1826-7. The pagination of each issue is as follows: October consists of pages 145 through 192 illustrated with 2 engravings; November consists of pages 193-240 illustrated with 2 engravings; and the December issue consists of pages 241-250 and 253-284 illustrated with 2 engravings. Pages 251/2 are lacking from the December issue. Several page corners are creased and there is some occasional soiling throughout. There is minor dampstaining to the bottom edges of the pages with some heavier dampstaining near the rear. <p>The first appearance of Edgar Allan Poe's "Thou Art the Man!" which is sometimes called the first comic detective story here published on pages 219 through 224 of the November 1844 issue.<p>The editor of Godey's made at least one change in the text: "old fellow" for "old cock". 18520002046Baltimore Maryland MD 1852. On offer is an original manuscript legal document from 1852 from Baltimore Maryland detailing the failure of one party to construct several houses on Oregon Street according to the contract. There are signatures of Thomas Willis George H. Stewart and John P. Poe who witnessed the document. We believe John was the nephew of the poet Edgar Allen Poe through his mother Josephine Clemm a sister of Virginia Clemm Edgar's wife as well as also being a second cousin of Poe through his father. John Poe's father Neilson Poe was responsible for finding Edgar Allan Poe sick just before he died and helping to bury him even though Poe had despised him for opposing his marriage to Virginia. As such this document makes for a very interesting piece of Baltimore history from shortly after Edgar Allan Poe's death. John Prentiss Poe went on to become Attorney General of Maryland. Another significant signature is of George H. Steuart sometimes Stewart who we believe is either the famous Confederate Civil War general from Baltimore George H. Steuart 1828-1903 a Confederate brigadier General or his father Major General George H. Steuart 1790-1867 served during the War of 1812 and also during the Civil War as a militia general who ordered Maryland's militia troops to fight the Federal troops in some of the first action of the Civil War. The younger Steuart led troops at battles at First Bull Run Shenandoah Cross Keys Gettysburg Payne's Farm Wilderness Spotsylvania Petersburg and Appomattox. VG. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 189220581Thomas Crowell - New York 1892. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. This old book from 1892 is in Excellent condition and appears to have never been read. This is a very handsomely bound smaller sized book with gold gilt on the top page fore-edge and bright gold decorative designs on the covers and spine. The copyright date is 1892 by Thomas Crowell with no other dates or printings shown. The book includes a 24 page biographical sketch of Poe by N.H. Dole plus a 30 page article titled The Poetical Principal no author stated. Then is the section titled Poems starting with The Raven - there are 131 pages of Poems and also 4 Illustrations on glossy paper. This is a smaller sized book about 4" x 6" - the covers are light blue with a white colored spine all decorated in bright gold designs. The covers are clean and firmly attached the binding is strong and all pages are clean and unmarked. This book almost looks like it just came from the store! Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the rear hinge between pages 788 & 789 resulting in the back cover being shaky. There is scuffing/shelf wear to the gilt top stain along the bottom edge of the text block. The pages are lightly age-toned but mostly clean with only an occasional light stain or foxing spot here and there though heavier foxing to the front end papers the frontispiece and the tissue guard over the frontispiece. Followed by the French translation of Eureka also by Baudelaire. The text is preceded by a preface by Théophile Gautier. Minor restorations to the margins of the covers and to the foot of the spine. The work was sold separately or as the seventh volume of Charles Baudelaires complete works whose publication extended over three years. Published as a two-volume set one year after Poe's untimely death the first volume contains Poe's tales and the second his poems. The third volume containing his criticism and including Rufus Wilmot Griswold's infamous memoir a slanderous and inaccurate account of Poe's life also appeared in 1850. A fourth volume BAL 16161 with Arthur Gordon Pym and other prose works intended as a companion to reprints of the first three was not published until 1856. Caroline Chesebro March 30 1825 – February 16 1873 was an American writer of fiction including short stories and novels. Born "Caroline Chesebrough" but known by her preferred spelling of "Caroline Chesebro" she was founder of The Packard Quarterly. In 1848 she became a contributor to Graham's American Monthly Magazine which Poe edited and in which he first published "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" now recognized as the first detective story. N.
