With frontispiece of Socrates. Title page is printed in red and black. Greek text with the Latin version of J. Leunclavis. Pages are clean and crisp with occasional faint spots of marginal foxing. Inscription written in a miniscule old hand on verso of front free end paper. Period fine binding in full deep red morocco - smooth spine gilt in five compartments with a fer à l' oiseau center stamp and arabesque corner pieces. Front and rear covers framed with a simple triple line gilt fillet border. The interior contains inner dentelles and blue paste-paper end sheets. Tiffany bookplate of Michigan business man and avid book collector Albert May Todd known as "the Peppermint King" on the inside front cover. The binding is in an excellent state of preservation with some rubbing on the outer corner tips of the boards. All edges are gilt. An ownership note dated 1814 is written in a miniscule old hand on the verso of the front fly-leaf; a later penciled inscription bellow apparently notes that the book was in a Sotheby's auction Dec. 5-9 1927. Xenophon 428-354 b.c.e. Athenian aristocrat soldier and historian. His Memorabilia in four books records the reminiscences of Socrates with the intent of defending the sage against charges of impiety towards the gods. Full calf covers ruled in gilt spine lettered and ruled in gilt. 316 pp. Some scuffing to edges and hinges ownership signature and stamp at the head of the title page; a clean very good copy in general. Translated from the French work published in 1765: "La Philosophie de L'Histoire. Par feu l'Abbe Bazin." The book was published in French under the Bazin pseudonym to protect Voltaire from persecution but this English edition appeared the following year under his own name. As in the Mcgill copy Patrick Lee Collection this copy has the page number '44' printed upside-down and page number '93' printed as '39'. There was at least one edition in French published in London in 1765 but this 1766 edition appears to be the first in English. Printed for L. Allcock, 1766. Hardcover

Scientist theologian philosopher he was the first to identify oxygen and other core gases. He invented soda water. In 1794 he emigrated to Pennsylvania where was befriended by Thomas Jefferson as 'one of the few lives precious to mankind'. His achievements have only recently begun to be acknowledged. His metaphysical works influenced Jeremy Bentham John Stuart Mill and Herbert Spencer. Priestley saw matter as the manifestation of spiritual force.</em></p><p><strong><em>Price Richard</em></strong><em> 1723–1791 FRS philosopher demographer and political radical. Richard Price was the son of Rhys Price a dissenting minister and Catherine Richards. Born at Tyn Ton Llangeinor Glamorgan Wales Richard studied under Vavasor Griffiths at Chancefield Talgarth.</em> <em>His writings in defence of the American patriots led to an invitation to advise congress conveyed to him by Benjamin Franklin Arthur Lee and John Adams. A friend of Thomas Paine Thomas Jefferson Adam Smith David Hume </em><em>A member of the intellectual societies the Bowood Group and Benjamin Franklin's 'Club of Honest Whigs'. In 1772 Price recruited Joseph Priestley to the Bowood Group. It was through her friendship with Price that then unpublished Mary Wollstonecraft met the radical publisher Joseph Johnson. Price helped her to visit Lisbon to see Fanny Blood. She published 'A Vindication on the rights of men' in response to Burke's attack on Price and her 'Vindication on the rights of woman' extended Price's arguments on equality for women.</em></p><p><strong>Rev. JOSEPH COCKIN 1755-1828.</strong> Author and non-conformist minister. "He was a fearless zealous able and devoted minister. He preached annually at some of the large chapels in London where his ministry was very acceptable and useful. He also preached before the London Missionary Society in 1798 and was largely occupied in public services in his own county."</p><p>Cockin published and wrote the introduction to John Locke's Letter concerning Toleration.
