Ornate gilt spine titling and decorations. Laid paper. Hand marbled end papers. Defunct parochial library stamp on first free endpaper. Previous owner's name on title page. Leather bound Hand bound Grancolas Jean Doctor of the Sorbonne theologian liturgist; b. near Chateaudun about 1660; d. at Paris August 1 1732. Having received the degree of Doctor of Theology of the faculty of Paris in 1685 he became chaplain to the brother of Louis XIV. He pronounced the funeral oration of this prince but his panegyric displeased the son of the deceased the Duke of Orleans future Regent of France who dismissed him from his house. His unfortunate essay caused Grancolas to abandon official eloquence and having devoted much time to studying liturgical ceremonies and comparing the various usages with the text of the ancient writers who have given an account of them he undertook to communicate to the public his observations on this head. His first work dealt with the antiquity of the ceremonies of the sacraments. The favorable reception accorded this endeavor led Grancolas to publish the next year a study of the custom of dipping the consecrated bread in the wine. However the author was desirous of participating in less severe questions and wished to engage in theological polemics. At that time the matter of Quietism was creating a great stir in the world and Grancolas conceived the idea of plunging into the quarrel by a refutation of the heresy which he entitled Le Quietisme contraire au doctrine des sacraments Quietism contrary to the doctrine of the Sacraments and which appeared in 1693. - Catholic Encyclopedia Imbert de Bats hardcover books

Both parts of Paine's famous work in defense of political revolution. The first part was originally printed in 1791 and the second part followed the next year. "Rights of Man 1791 a book by Thomas Paine including 31 articles posits that popular political revolution is permissible when a government does not safeguard the natural rights of its people. Using these points as a base it defends the French Revolution against Edmund Burke's attack in Reflections on the Revolution in France 1790." "Thomas Paine February 9 1737 O.S. January 29 1736 â June 8 1809 was an author pamphleteer radical inventor intellectual revolutionary and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Born in Thetford Norfolk Paine emigrated to the British American colonies in 1774 in time to participate in the American Revolution. His principal contributions were the powerful widely-read pamphlet Common Sense 1776 advocating colonial America's independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and The American Crisis 1776â1783 a pro-revolutionary pamphlet series. The historian Saul K. Padover in the biography Jefferson: A Great American's Life and Ideas refers to Paine as "a corsetmaker by trade a journalist by profession and a propagandist by inclination." Paine greatly influenced the French Revolution. He wrote the Rights of Man 1791 a guide to Enlightenment ideas. Despite not speaking French he was elected to the French National Convention in 1792. The Girondists regarded him as an ally so the Montagnards especially Robespierre regarded him as an enemy. In December of 1793 he was arrested and imprisoned in Paris then released in 1794. He became notorious because of The Age of Reason 1793â94 his book advocating deism promoting reason and freethinking and arguing against institutionalized religion and Christian doctrines. He also wrote the pamphlet Agrarian Justice 1795 discussing the origins of property and introduced the concept of a guaranteed minimum income. Paine remained in France during the early Napoleonic era but condemned Napoleon's dictatorship calling him "the completest charlatan that ever existed". In 1802 at President Jefferson's invitation he returned to America where he died on June 8 1809.
