Quarto later edition pp. 829. marbled paper-covered boards half-bound in morocco about 600 illustrations by Jean Gigoux including frontispiece and two title pages. All text in French. "This later edition of Gil Blas one of several testifies to the vast popularity of Gigoux's illustrations" says Gordon Ray in The Art of the French Illustration Book 215. Gigoux reportedly had a low opinion of the engravers used here "Yet . his designs were sometimes realized with verve and precision" Ray writes. "Certainly their inventiveness is unfailing." Also see Carteret III 386 and Vicaire 341. Condition of this book: Boards worn upper joint splitting. Leaves clean and tight occasional foxing. A small strip has been cut out of the first title page apparently to remove the name of the original owner. Size: Quarto. Text is in French. Text body is clean and free from previous owner annotation underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean neat and free of foxing. Former owner's name written on half title of each volume: Edgar W. Corner. This was probably the Edgar W. Corner of Baltimore Md. who was a student at Washington College in 1851 and went on to be a successful rice and sugar importer. He died in New York City in 1878 apparently of alcohol poisoning.
