Boosey. Full marbled calf with gilt ruled spine xvi 379 1 12p. blank rear free endpaper absent. Some external wear mainly surface splits to the joints covers firmly attached and a bit of edgewear. "This later edition of Gil Blas one of several testifies to the vast popularity of Gigoux's illustrations" says Gordon Ray in The Art of the French Illustration Book 215. Gigoux reportedly had a low opinion of the engravers used here "Yet . his designs were sometimes realized with verve and precision" Ray writes. "Certainly their inventiveness is unfailing." Also see Carteret III 386 and Vicaire 341. Condition of this book: Boards worn upper joint splitting. Leaves clean and tight occasional foxing. A small strip has been cut out of the first title page apparently to remove the name of the original owner. Size: Quarto. Text is in French.
