This text was published in the Propos d'un Normand de 1911. Interesting manuscript written following the appointment of Adolphe Messimy to the post of Minister of War: ""Ce général ministre avait en somme très noblement répondu. Il faudra enfin décider un jour ou l'autre sans aucun mystère que la Défense Nationale est républicaine."" ""This general minister had in sum responded very nobly. We must finally decide one day or another without any mystery that National Defense is republican."" Indeed the newly elected minister sought to redefine relations between political power and military authorities. Alain reproaches the military world for its opacity ""Comment la France sera-t-elle défendue Nous n'en savons rien. . chez nous même les députés ne s'en font aucune idée."" ""How will France be defended We know nothing about it. . even our deputies have no idea."" before proposing solutions: ""Donc il faudrait qu'il soit bien entendu que chaque chef garde une large initiative dans l'exécution d'un programme déterminé. Et ce programme ne dépend pas seulement de la science militaire ; c'est aux ministres avec le conseil des grands chefs qu'il appartient de le déterminer."" ""Therefore it should be well understood that each leader retains broad initiative in executing a determined program. And this program does not depend solely on military science; it is up to ministers with the counsel of senior leaders to determine it."" From 1903 Alain published weekly chronicles titled ""Propos"" in La Dépêche de Rouen et de Normandie. Fine. s. d. 17 mars 1917 8.40 x 13 cm 5 photographies Superb set of five original photographs depicting famous sailor and writer then aviator Alain Gerbault and his crew returning from his first air combat between Picardie and Champagne on March 17 1917. Three of the photographs have penciled notes on the back. The same three bear the printed stamp ""Mme Houx Delapierre 55 Paul Boudet 53000 Laval"" Gerbault's home town. Gerbault scored his first personal victory by shooting down an enemy aboard ""Smash"" aircraft no. 7 of the ""Escadrille des Loups"" whose number and wolf profile are clearly marked on the plane's fuselage in the photographs: ""When he landed his mechanic saw that it was no joke: the fuselage of his own plane is riddled with 54 bullet holes"": the mechanic and gunner pose in front of the plane in one of the shots. Gerbault poses in three photographs aboard his aircraft. Four French soldiers are seen in the last image in front of Gerbault's plane. This pioneer of wartime aviation would go on to make a name for himself on the seas crossing the Atlantic solo from East to West in 1923 and also becoming a tennis champion. A rare and precious snapshot of a historic moment in early military aviation bearing witness to a glorious feat of arms. unknown

Between the sixth and fifth centuries B. C. Athenian artisans flooded the Mediterranean world with remarkable decorated vases depicting a large variety of images. Using the resources of social and religious anthropology the authors exploit the richness of this material to re-create the intellectual and emotional milieu of the inhabitant of a Greek city-state. A C White's Christmas series number 24. Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 2645 Whyld 24 Betts 33-40 First edition. 300 problems by Godfrey Heathcote 1870-1952. Mainly 2- and 3-movers 100 problems are in big diagrams. A. C. White Christmas Series was popular series which ran from 1905 through 1936. the publisher of the series was chess composer and enthusiast Alain Campbell White 1880-1951. White sent most books of the series to his friends as Christmas gifts. But they were offered for sale too. The series consists of 44 books on problem chess and one pamphlet from 1912. Most books are hard covers bound in red cloth with gold lettering usually written in English sometimes in German and French and one was partially in Czech. Most of the books have a printed Christmas wish slip by White usually bound in after a title page. It appears that a part of the editions of some books have wish slips and some parts do not. The number of copies published of separate volumes is unknown for the most part. Karel Morky.
