Wilson—already renowned for his dermatological writings—provides a detailed examination of the pathology transmission symptoms and progression of syphilis with special emphasis on the distinction between primary and constitutional disease. The text includes discussions of contemporary treatment protocols case observations and the evolving medical understanding of syphilitic eruptions. This edition also includes a dedicatory preface to Philip Ricord the leading French authority on syphilis acknowledging Ricord’s influence on Wilson’s own work.<br /> <br /> The volume is further distinguished by four hand-colored plates illustrating syphilitic lesions with notable clarity and detail—an important resource for physicians of the period and a major reason for the book’s collectibility today. The cloth shows typical institutional wear: rubbing to boards fraying at spine ends and a library call-number label at the foot of the spine. Hinges remain intact and the text block is firm. Internally the book contains library stamps accession numbers and pencil shelf marks. Pages show scattered foxing mostly light with some plates showing mild offsetting. Sir Erasmus Wilson 1809-1884 a pupil of Hebra distinguished himself first in anatomy and was elected member of the Royal College of Surgeons but soon decided in spite of the prejudice against specialism in England to devote himself to dermatology. His contributions were many. He described trichorrexis nodosa erythema nodosum universal exfoliative dermatitis. His outstanding nosologic feat here was the assembly of the various manifestions of lichen planus into the category of a single disease; this he first described and named 1869. His suggestions of the addition of benzoic acid as a preservative for ointments introduced benzoated ointments. His chief works of the Skin 1842 which went through at least six editions. His writings on the care of the skin for laymen were credited with having made the bath popular in England. His observations and original suggestions his able writings and particularly the sanity with which he applied his comprehensive knowledge to the practical problems of dermatology made him one of the great dermatologists." First Portuguese edition translated by Henrique Xavier Baeta with his added notes. This is a translation of Darwin's Zoonomia and part of his Materia medica. Baeta a naval physician took his bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Coimbra then his PhD in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. His doctoral paper Dissertatio de Febribus Intermittentibus poecipus medendis 1800 and his work on fevers Comparative view of the Theories & Practice of Drs. Cullen Brown and Darwin in the treatment of fever and of acute Rheumatism London 1800 also touched on his interest of Erasmus Darwin. In 1800 he left Coimbra and moved to Lisbon opened his practice whereas in Coimbra he was being persecuted. In 1831 he was searched arrested and placed in jail where he remained until July 24 1833. The boards are in fine condition as is the marbled pageblock. Four pencilled references noted on rear original free paper.
