Lib. stating there is no index for this volume. <br> Shinn UC Berkley 1880 was the first woman to receive a doctorate from the University of California and the eleventh individual awarded a Ph.D. at the university. She worked with her brother's newborn Ruth to develop a scientific consideration of infant development. "Her dissertation Notes on the Development of a Child was published in 3 installments between 1893 and 1899. In 1900 she also published a popular version of her findings called The Biography of a Baby. Her works received widespread acclaim and for years her Notes was considered the foundational text for developmental psychology classes. According the RBH the last copy to appear at auction was in 1940.The first book designed by Mr. Updike printed under his supervision at the Riverside Press. “Before he began work on his own account Updike had made one book and only one in which he had had entirely his own way. It is a simple volume with little that is distinctive or decorative about it except that there is nothing wrong; the proportions of page and margins title size of types and composition tone of paper and quality of press work offer nothing for obvious criticism. Title page bears small black and white engraving also present on the last page. Two large fold-out data tables are present in beautiful condition printed on vellum. Other printed data tables throughout. Includes seven appendices. x 154 pp. <br><br>CONDITION: Very good. Cover shows wear and spine repair is solid. Reinforced inner hinges with a dark teal publisher's cloth. Leaves have lightly toned with light foxing throughout. Text is very bold and bright. Occasional small tears on page edges. Unmarked except for previous owner's name written within the front endpapers and notation about the book's contents in pencil on a front flyleaf. A solid handsome copy. Full refund if not satisfied. <br><br>ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Daniel Berkeley Updike 1860-1941 was an American printer and historian of typography. In 1880 he joined the publishers Houghton Mifflin & Company of Boston as an errand boy. He worked for the firm's Riverside Press and trained as a printer but soon moved to typographic design. In 1896 he founded the Merrymount Press. . Updike was greatly interested in the history of printing types and in 1922 published Printing Types: Their History Forms and Use. An extensively revised second edition was published in 1937. Folio. 28 566 2 pp. Bound into full vellum over boards decorated with gilt botanical design ornate brass clasps. Printed on American hand-made paper. TEG others deckled. Text printed in black and red. With elaborate foliated borders designed by D. B. Updike throughout the work. <br /> <br /> It was printed for the General Convention of the Episcopal Church of 1892. This convention decided on the second major American edition of the prayer book being the first major revision since the edition of 1789. Three different versions of this work were issued. This is one of only 75 copies of the "canonical edition" which were distributed to Episcopal dioceses. On the verso of the title page it is signed by 13 of the people involved in the revision approved by the Convention of 1892. This includes financier and banker J. P. Morgan. Morgan supported the Protestant Episcopal Church throughout his life and commissioned this work. Other signers include William Croswell Doane Henry Cadman Potter Samuel C. Hart Joseph Packard Jr Samuel Eliot and others. The title page does not have a foliated border. <br /> <br /> There was a similar "subscriber's edition" done limited to 500 copies which reproduces the signatures in facsimile and its title page has foliated decorations. Another edition in a smaller format edition distributed to attendees of the 1892 Convention.<br /> The Plan of Symbolism and method of decoration were arranged by Daniel Berkeley Updike founder of the Merrymount Press. The preparatory studies of plants were made by William Wells Bosworth. The floral designs for the borders and cover were by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and the final drawings for reproduction were by Joseph Eliot Hill. <br /> Closed ~7 cm tear at top of front cover hinge. There is some damp staining to the foredge as well as to the edges of some of the pages. This is most noticeable on the last dozen or so pages but at no point do the stains reach the text. The flowering of American Arts and Crafts sensibilities First Updike edition deluxe limited issue one of 500 large copies on handmade paper. Planned by the distinguished printer Daniel Berkeley Updike 1860-1941 this issue features pages framed with garlands of various plants each appropriate to the text it adorns. The deluxe binding is similarly gilt with thistles and Tudor roses alluding to the British origins of the Episcopal church. Updike's rationale for the decoration is elucidated in the loosely inserted pamphlet which accompanies this copy. While his initial intention was to emulate medieval devotional volumes he was limited by the typography common to the entire first edition which would not allow for the introduction of ornate initials. Since the borders could not be illuminated it was decided that the simple monochrome patterns must be elevated by the use of symbolism. This would be botanical befitting the style of the Middle Ages. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue an architect who often lent his skills to publishing created the designs for the binding and the borders. Although Updike's Merrymount Press was also founded in 1893 they were not prepared for the printing of The Book of Common Prayer and the presswork went to Theodore Low De Vinne 1828-1914 one of the founders of the Grolier Club. While Updike subsequently moved away from Kelmscott-inspired printing this early project is part of his cultivation of Arts and Crafts book production in late 19th-century America. Folio. Elaborate foliate borders throughout text printed in red and black. Original vellum spine and front cover lettered in gilt Gothic script and elaborately decorated with gilt foliate design with Tudor roses and Scottish thistle cornerpieces twin metal clasps endpapers patterned with gilt rose and thistle design top edge gilt fore and bottom edges uncut white bookmarker. Near-contemporary bookplate recording the volume as part of J. William Smith's bequest to Syracuse Public Library. Recounting the author's hunting journey to the Western prairies sharing impressions experiences and recollections of his travels in the American West. Illustrated with seven full page plates and a vignette to the title page lacking one plate. With Draycot House bookplate on leather to the front pastedown medieval manor largely re-modelled by the Long family over the years and in 1864 after Lord Cowley's inheritance. It was demolished in 1952-4. From the library at Julian Park Hertfordshire belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire sister to Edward James a key figure in the Surrealist movement and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence James Joyce Wyndham Lewis and others. A hedonistic pursuer she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'. In a half calf binding over marbled boards and edges with new marbled endpapers. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and a touch of edge wear minor chipping and some rubbing to the boards and spine. With Draycot House bookplate on leather to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the first and last few leaves otherwise the pages are bright and clean throughout.
