With an engraved frontispiece possibly by William Charles depicting a drunken rider felled by a low hanging branch. Thirteen woodcuts in the text by William Mason. The rare wrapper here with the front panel present only contains yet another woodcut likely also by Mason. A temperance tract by the famous Parson Weems inventor of the George Washington cherry tree incident. A series of well written cautionary tales often quite humorous. "As the wan countenance of the lust-worn harlot becomes still more dark and dismal at the sight of a young female fresh and blushing in all the charms of virgin innocence so does the soul of a filthy drunkard experience a quickened hell at the site of a gentleman well drest and breathing the cheerful air of cleanliness and sobriety." The pamphlet is worn with a small one-eighth inch hole in the engraved frontispiece and one page torn through the text due to a careless page separation. Rare American imprint by a publisher active from about 1819-1850 who began publishing the Yale Literary Review; book first published in 1709. This title is often confused with a book published in 1836 in France by Baron von Holbach; Holbach's book is anti-organized religion and Trenchard's is not; Trenchard was a former Quaker who theorized that 'transports' etc. attributed to God are owing to natural causes. Title page mistakenly attributes this title to John Locke the reason for this is unknown; we found a list of books misattributed to Locke in a Locke bibliography but this is not on it. This is a chapbook about 3in x 5in recently bound in nice leather with marbled endpapers; new binding is near fine the chapbook only good original covers discolored stained rubbed and chipped; chip and tear to side edge of chapbook front cover closed with non-acidic Filmoplast P; many pages have been turned down and most have worn creased corners; pages stained and darkened; stain to top edge and foreedge; foreedge stain mostly visible on p51-52; corners of rear blank flyleaf torn off; 52pp. <br/> <br/> A. 1896101013<p>London received by Pond on July 20 1896. 1896. Very good. - Over 125 words penned on 4 sides of 7-3/4 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide creamy white paper with attached leaf. Writing from London the American elocutionist Locke Richardson tells the American lecture manager Major James B. Pond that he's not yet able to give him a definite answer and he will be at the disposal of his agent in Cincinnati on his return. He goes on to say that he will be "glad to accept some business" that he is sure Pond will be able to send his way "Possibly you might do something for me for a series of readings in Chicago." Signed in full "Locke Richardson". Folded for mailing with Pond's red stamp at top left. There are a few ink smudges. Very good.</p><p>The American elocutionist Locke Richardson 1844-1899 was lauded for his intelligent and powerful renditions of selections from Shakespeare's plays. Richardson was once a member of the Lotos Club as well as The Players. Major Pond had managed him on previous tours in 1873 and 1874.</p> London, received by Pond on July 20, 1896.

A very scarce work this is an exact facsimile of a 1782 pamphlet the only copy of which is held by the library of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society Taunton Castle.The work concerns the Monmouth Rebellion also known as the Revolt of the West an attempt by Protestant factions to overthrow the newly appointed Roman Catholic King James II in 1685.This pamphlet contains a list of 261 persons condemned by Chief Justice Jefferies in 1685 following the rebellion details about these men and the locations in which they were executed.With a three page advertisement for the publication of upcoming similar works to the rear.With the contemporary owner's inscription 'Philip Broadwead Nov 11th 1888' to the front free endpaper. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Fraying to cloth at back strip head and tail. Marks to boards most prominent to tail of front board where there is a significant region of foxing and discolouration. Contemporary inscription to front free endpaper. Most important for the 1st English edition of "A Treatise on Man and the Development of His Faculties" Quetelet's foundational work of social statistics first published in French "Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés". This edition contains a new preface by the author to defend his work from objections brought against it subsequent to the publication of the Paris edition of 1835. Quetelet's goal was to understand the statistical laws underlying crime rates marriage rates or suicide rates correlating them with other social factors. "With Quetelet's work . . . a new era in statistics began. It presented a new technique of statistics or rather the first technique at all. The material was thoughtfully elaborated arranged according to certain preestablished principles and made comparable . . . 1880575<p>Condition: Good. This is a rare hard-rebound first edition third printing. Much in this volume first appeared in newspapers and magazines and then as a collection first published in 1864 under the title <em>The Nasby Papers Letters and Sermons</em>. In amplified form they appeared again in 1865 under the title <em>Nasby. Divers Views Opinions and Prophecies</em>. <em>The Struggles</em> edition also known as "The Nasby Letters" for short was first published in 1872 and went through five printings until 1893. This 1880 copy the third printing is missing its end papers fly pages and title/copyright page. Based on a complete copy at Harvard University seen digitally through HathiTrust the table of contents and page count shows the copy at hand is the 1880 printing of 627 pages. It is shorter than other printings which include three lectures given in Boston during the Civil War. Page counts for the other printings are 720 670 and 715. For reference copies of the title and copyright pages held by Harvard are inserted with the rebound pages. PRICES: Reprints from various printings are available for from $32 to $42. Two original 1872 first editions were found both in fair condition for $137 and $95. This copy for sale in Good condition in its rebound preserved state has a strong binding for all its pages. The paper is supple with no chipping and the Nast engravings are clear and crisp. Some pages have soiling and some have foxing and two pages have plant leaf impressions where leaves were placed to press them. This is a well-preserved 1880 edition made collectible by its near completeness and preserved condition.</p> Lock Publishing Co. hardcover

Duodecimo size 299 pp. The popular work of ironic fiction written by journalist and political commentator David Ross Locke 1833-1888. Locke's greatest influence was through his satirical writings as "Petroleum Vesuvius Nasby". The Nasby letters harshly ridiculed the plight of peoples in the Confederate states and the complicity of Northern politicians. Both Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant recognized Nasby as a significant source of support for their presidencies. <br /> <br /> Thomas Nast 1840-1902 eventually heightened the work with his illustrations and was also credited by Lincoln for inspiring people to support the war effort. His work marked an important shift in shift in political cartoons which had before relied mainly on text rather than imagery. "Swinging Round the Cirkle" is made up of some of the most weighted of Nasby's moral statements especially concerning the plight of African Americans.
