"Captain Joseph Fry was made the new captain of Virginius from October 1873. Fry had served in the US Navy for 15 years before joining the Confederacy during the Civil War. Fry was promoted to commodore in the Confederate Navy. However after that position disappeared after the Union victory in 1865 Fry was underemployed. In 1873 he took the job as captain of Virginius. Virginius moored in Kingston Jamaica by this time needed repair and the boilers were breaking down. As most of the previous crew had deserted Fry recruited a new crew of 52 men both American and British. Many were inexperienced and apparently did not understand that Virginius was supporting the Cuban rebellion. Three were very young recruits no older than 13 years of age. Virginius took on 103 native Cuban soldiers that arrived on board a New York steamer. Fry had been warned by the US Consul at Kingston Thomas H. Pearne that he would be shot if captured. However Fry did not believe the Spanish would shoot a blockade runner. In mid-October Captain Fry accompanied by four mercenaries took Virginius to Haiti and loaded the ship with munitions. On October 30 Virginius sailed to Comito to pick up more weapons and then on the same day started toward Cuba. The Spanish had been warned when Virginius left Jamaica and sent out the warship Tornado to capture the vessel. " from Wikipedia . The J. B. Burr Publishing Co. hardcover

According to Garrison and Morton: "When Volta questioned the validity of experiments claiming to show responsiveness of an ex vivo heart devoid of blood flow and nervous connections Bichat obtained permission to experiment upon the freshly killed bodies of those guillotined during the French Revolution. His trials on both laboratory animals and human cadavers led him to conclude that cardiac excitation by electricity would occur only when the organ was stimulated by direct contact." Very good. <br /> <br /> Very uncommon juvenile work from Scotland about which scant information is to be found. The story concerns Mabel Minnie and Mona two schoolgirl friends and their archenemy who develop and undertake a mission to educate the poor children of the miners living in the row houses down by the pit. The idea is to use gentler methods of introducing Christianity at which the local missionaries and curates have failed:<br /> <br /> "We will take lessons from them and try to avoid what seems to have been their great mistake - injudiciousness; and perhaps showing a little too plainly that they considered them heathen and were determined to convert them at any cost."<br /> <br /> <br /> The book contains themes of friendship and antagonism philanthropy and stewardship faith and hope. However perhaps most interestingly the story explores death and loss as the young protagonists first grapple with the passing of a miner's wife from consumption. SPOILER ALERT Then Mabel becomes ill and Minnie must provide her and others hope as the young girl dies from fever due to a ruptured blood vessel.<br /> <br /> OCLC locates perhaps 3 physical copies of this rare book for the young 19th century reader. . 1863Cat320Concord Massachusetts: Benjamin Tolman 1863. Printed broadside 11 ¼ x 10 inches. Some tearing at folds very good. A straightforward but telling piece documenting the expansion of a Massachusetts burying ground during the American Civil War signed in type by three trustees of the North Sudbury Burying Ground. As casualties mounted and remains were returned to hometowns existing cemeteries were frequently enlarged with new land enclosed and improved by contract. The specification of “25 rods†over 400 feet of wall indicates a substantial addition typical of mid-war efforts to increase capacity in established town burial grounds rather than create entirely new sites. Sudbury contributed roughly 150–170 men to Union service of whom approximately eleven died a scale of loss consistent with small Massachusetts towns and sufficient to register locally in burial and memorial practices. We find no other records of ephemera or broadsides relating to Civil War-era cemetery expansion. This notice is not at AAS. Benjamin Tolman unknown
