Second English edition with additions of one of Malebranche's 1638-1715 major philosophical works on the nature of human error attempting to synthesize Augustine and Descartes. It was first published in Paris in 1674 and caused much furor among the Catholic intellectual elite being placed on the Index librorum prohibtorum in 1709. Thomas Taylor 1669-1735 the translator was an Oxford theology graduate who served parishes in Oxfordshire and Hampshire. Treatise on Nature and Grace by the author of The Search for Truth together with a defense of the author. Both were published anonymously by Nicolas Malebranche a Catholic priest and rationalist philosopher whose attempt to synthesize St. Augustine's and Descartes' views was meant to demonstrate God's active role in all world affairs. Building on the ideas about the nature and abilities of God that he presented in The Search for Truth Malebranche here expounds on the nature of God's volition and God's activity in the natural world and interaction with human beings. At the behest of critic and Cartesian philosopher Antoine Arnauld and his supporters this work was placed on the Roman Catholic Church's Index of Prohibited Books in 1690. The two had engaged in an extended polemic against one another following the publication of the treatise of which Malebranche's Defense is but one example and several of Arnauld's works were also banned as was Malebranche's The Search for Truth though not until 1709. The Whole work Compleat to which is Added the Author's Treatise of Nature and Grace being a Consequence of the Principles contained in the search Translated by T. Taylor Brown leather heavily bumped and rubbed on edges and corners. Spine is remarkably solid with gilt raised bands and embossed leaves. The book appears that it may have been rebound many years back due to the good condition of the leather on the spine vs. the boards. However there appears to be original endpapers. Bookplate on front pastedown of a J. P. Fallofield. Endpapers and several pages in are chipped on edges. Damp stains on edges. Paper used in preface is different and of higher quality than the remainder of the test. Two pages in the preface are close to being loose. Heavy foxing throughout with some pages being far more affected than others. This is a remarkable book by a man who's books were banned. Size: Folio - over 12' - 15' tall.</p> Thomas Bennet hardcover

As a leading Cartesian Malebranche argued in The Search after Truth 1675 and the Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion 1688 that our ideas provide no direct certain knowledge of bodies but that instead we "see all things in god." This divinely ordained occasionalism provided for the apparent regularity of the natural world without appealing to any genuine causal interaction among things.
