Seconde Edition revised and expanded by Renouvier. 374 pages with contents and errata in rear. This is the third volume of the series beginning with "La Certitude" XVIII "De la Certitude des Sciences et leur Classification Rationnelle". Renouvier was the first French philosopher after Nicolas Malebranche to formulate a complete idealistic system and had a vast influence on the development of French thought. His system is based on Immanuel Kant's as his chosen term "néo-criticisme" indicates; but it is a transformation rather than a continuation of Kantianism. The insistence on the validity of personal experience leads Renouvier to a yet more important divergence from Kant in his treatment of volition. Liberty he says in a much wider sense than Kant is man's fundamental characteristic. Human freedom acts in the phenomenal not in an imaginary noumenal sphere. Belief is not merely intellectual but is determined by an act of will affirming what we hold to be morally good. Renouvier became an important influence upon the thought of American psychologist and philosopher William James. James wrote that "but for the decisive impression made on me in the 1870s by his masterly advocacy of pluralism I might never have got free from the monistic superstition under which I had grown up. Librairie républicaine de la liberté de penser Paris 1851 14.5 x 22.5 cm Relié Rare first edition of this project whose development was certainly collective with contributions from several democrats including Frédéric Charrassin Charles Fauvety Adolphe Louis Chouippe and Alexandre Erdan but which was authored by the neo-criticist philosopher Charles Renouvier 18151903. Bound in contemporary half cherry-colored sheepskin with a smooth spine adorned with gilt fillets; some rubbing to the spine and boards. Marbled paper over boards handmade laid paper endpapers and pastedowns modern bookplate affixed to the front pastedown slightly bumped corners minor tears to the joints speckled edges. Original binding. Minor insignificant foxing. The central idea of this work is that of direct government and direct legislation inspired by the debate initiated by Rittinghausen. At the time this idea was considered utopian and dangerousmuch like in contemporary debateson the grounds that it would discredit the representative system and contrary to the authors intentions play into the hands of the emerging Caesarism this was 1851. The book also presents other proposals for institutional reform notably the adoption of the canton as the basic administrative and political unit of the nation intended to form the true French commune.
