Housed in a manilla envelope with a note in an unknown hand possibly Bacon's: "Theroux cover - Note the 'tape job' is my doing. It looks fine once it's matted but the mat was too big to include here." With a finished copy of the first edition indicating Bacon as the designer. Bacon was one of the most prolific and best-known jacket designers of the second half of the 20th century and designed the jackets for Compulsion Catch-22 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest The Confessions of Nat Turner Rosemary's Baby Slaughterhouse-Five Portnoy's Complaint and innumerable others. One page with trivial thumb smudge faint variations in shade of the vellum but A SUPERB SPECIMEN the vellum smooth and creamy the paint and gold bright and the virtually unworn binding with shining gilt. Featuring several gorgeous moments this is a luxurious and appropriately luxuriant illuminated manuscript of Bacon's prescription for the ideal princely garden. The most prominent modern creator of illuminated manuscripts our artist Alberto Sangorski 1862-1932 started his professional life as secretary to a goldsmith's firm before being attracted to the book arts at the age of 43. He began doing illuminated manuscripts that were then bound by his brother Francis' firm Sangorski & Sutcliffe with the colophon crediting the manuscript to the firm rather than acknowledging Alberto's contribution. Partly because of this failure to recognize his work Alberto had a falling out with Francis sometime around 1910 at which time he took his talents to Riviere the chief competitor to his brother's bindery. Robert Riviere began as a bookseller and binder in Bath in 1829 then set up shop as a binder in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son and the bindery continued to do business until 1939. Riviere was happy to allow Albert to add a colophon proclaiming as here that "This manuscript . . . was designed written out and illuminated by Alberto Sangorski." The decoration in the present work has an airy light-hearted aura with the bright gold lettering the delicate intricate penwork and the whimsical fairies conveying considerable joy and playfulness. Photo Album of Bermuda and the Caribbean Islands

19168868Barbados Bermuda Antigua St. Lucia and other islands 1916. Very good . 7Â¼â€ x 10Â¼â€. Cloth over flexible thin card. 100 pages with 84 photographs pasted down. Most photos measure around 4â€ x 6â€ or 5â€ x 7â€ and three quarters are captioned. Very good plus: light overall wear; most photos a bit wavy with minor dark patches at edges where adhesive has bled through. This is a collection of vivid well-composed and neatly captioned photographs taken in Bermuda and several islands in the Caribbean. The album seems to have been compiled on a steamer trip and portrays a handful of white visitors and some apparent residents of the islands with a few hints as to their purpose there. Bermuda's the site for 16 of the shots; we see white women at â€œMrs. Curtis' House at Sommersetâ€ â€œMr. Daws' House and Lilly Farmâ€ the hotels â€œPrincessâ€ and â€œFrascatiâ€ and a local driver enabling â€œA Carriage Ride.â€ Five photos in Antigua reveal the â€œLunatic Asylumâ€ and â€œLepper Hospitalâ€ as well as great images of natives amid a â€œStreet Scene.â€ There are 28 shots from Barbados showing â€œSchool Childrenâ€ natives on â€œBroad Streetâ€ â€œCutting Sugar Caneâ€ and â€œThe Old Water Works.â€ We also see â€œDr. Messiah House at the Hospitalâ€ â€œA Sunday Meeting at Mr. Manning's Houseâ€ and natives assisting with â€œMildred Bowler taking a Donkey Ride.â€ Three of the eight photos at Dominic reveal a group â€œOn Board the S.S. Caraquetâ€ and there are lovely images â€œIn the Rossau Valleyâ€ and â€œIn the Garden on the Island.â€ The Caraquet was a Royal Mail Line ship sailing from the West Indies to Canada from the 1910s until it wrecked off Bermuda in 1923. Another image claims to show the â€œS.S. Guiana at St. Kits with Roosevelt on Boardâ€ a trip the former president made in 1916 which led to our date attribution. There are clipped images lauding the SS Vestris a luxury steamer that sailed from 1912 to 1928 shots of natives â€œCoaling at St. Luciaâ€ views of â€œMonseratâ€ and the â€œIsland of Martinique.â€ We think it's possible that these photos were taken by noted architect designer and world traveler Francis H. Bacon as the initials FHB appear in the corner of each shot. After graduating from MIT in 1877 Bacon worked on important archaeological excavations in Asia Minor and became the leading designer for renowned furniture firm A.H. Davenport and Company the namesake of the sofa. He also designed the shrine that holds the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution in the Library of Congress. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens holds a collection of photo albums he compiled on his travels from 1895 to 1919 which included steamer trips to the Mediterranean Vienna Paris and London. Some of the images are online and while we didn't see any with an imprint that matches ours we did find an archivist's blog post that shared that Bacon's architectural designs were â€œeasily identified by his signature initials: FHB.â€ We also note that Bacon bears a strong resemblance to a man seen in two of the present photos. A great collection of images from Bermuda and the Caribbean certainly worthy of and useful for further research. unknown
