This 5th edition was published after the author's death by his personal secretary William Rawley Doctor Divinity one of his Majesties Chaplaines. Hereunto is now added an alphabeticall table of the principall things contained in the whole worke. This work is an anthology of one thousand paragraphs consisting of extracts from many books mostly from antiquity and Bacon's own experiments and observations. It is fascinating as it contains numerous passages dealing with medical treatments for the prolongation of life and the preservation of flesh. At the end of the volume Rawley also included the New Atlantis. A Worke unfinished. Bacon was a scientist politician philosopher attorney general member of Parlement author etc. . He was also appointed Lord Chancery of the High Court but he had become best known for his promotion of the scientific method. He was knighted upon James I's ascension to the British throne. A handsome copy bound in 19th century 3/4 polished calf over cloth raised bands with title gilt portrait frontispiece and engraved title page had been mounted top edges of leaves were closely trimmed a bit frontispiece and title page have finger soiling text clean without foxing and beautifully printed. First Issue.</b> <br /><br /><b>With an early 17th-century inscription on the title page:</b> "<i>From his very much esteemed friend Raleigh</i>." It is thought that this might be an inscription by Raleigh's cousin George. The inscription is slightly faded from having been lightly washed. <br /><br />This is the official apologia for Raleigh's execution at the order of King James I. It was composed largely by Francis Bacon but also by the other commissioners who tried Raleigh and with additions by King James himself. It was published only a few months after the events it describes and as quickly as possible following Raleigh's beheading. <br /><br /><br />Starkey's article on the publication history of this book published in '<i>The Library'</i> in September of 1948 defined the first issue in conformity with this copy. His analysis is generally considered to supersede Pforzheimer's earlier analysis as well as that of the first edition of STC both of which identified a different first issue. Since Starkey's article STC has revised its entry assigning first issue priority to the issue offered here. <br /><br />Bacon began his prosecution by asserting that it was not ever a Sovereign's duty to justify himself to his people but that Raleigh's final speech had made it necessary to explain why his execution was deserved. Bacon then helpfully revised King James' assent to Raleigh's disastrous expedition to Guiana to conform to a magnanimous gesture. James had not it turned out believed in the existence as such of a 'City of Gold' but had humored and indulged Raleigh because of his influence and popularity. As it is written in this work probably by Bacon: "<i>Sir W. Rawleigh had so inchanted the world with his confident asseveration of that which every man was willing to beleeve as his maiesties honour was in a manner ingaged not to deny unto his people the adventure and hope of so great Riches to bee sought and atchieved at the charge of Voluntaries.</i>" <br /><br /><br />The work includes in full and for the first time in print the commission given to Raleigh for his Voyage and gives an account of how he betrayed this commission. Finally it gives a short account of Raleigh's voyage and supposed misdeeds as well as a detailed account of Raleigh's return and his purported attempts to escape. <br /><br />The volume is complete save the initial blank leaf which is absent from nearly all copies. Attributed to Nathaniel Bacon the work reviews the development of English political and legal systems from the earliest times through the reign of Edward III. Topics include Saxon and Norman rule the ranks of nobility court practices and the authority of the church into the seventeenth century. The research is frequently linked to John Selden. 1672032862London: Matthew Walbancke. Matthew Walbancke and Henry Twyford 1672 A very good copy in largely contemporary binding. In two parts with separate title pages dated 1647 and 1651 respectively. It is suggested that John Selden 1584-1654 is the true author of the work which was then edited by Nathaniel Bacon - whose name is on the title to the Continuation. However this is still a matter of argument. The work was produced originally as the Civil War came to its close and the Commonwealth was established and is written against the royal prerogative. A 'secret' or 'private' edition was produced in 1672 after the restoration of the monarchy. It is stated that 750 copies were produced and many were burnt or otherwise destroyed. The edition has the 2 works in one is dated as for the 1647/51 edition and there are variants of it. Detailed study Joseph A Dane University of Chicago Press suggests that the remnants of 1672 copies were put back together and sections reprinted later. This copy is clearly a 1672 'secret' edition of which parts are likely to be later printings. According to ESTC this copy has the Title page in setting A; Quires B-C are in setting 2; and Quire D in setting b. The binding is full calf with contemporary boards with blind ruled lines and new matching spine with raised bands and title label. Endpapers have been retained with repair and there are some ink numerals to the front and a latin quotation with initials to the verso of the fep. The text offers Bacon's advice illustrating how to life a long and healthy life as well as practicing healthy habits. Some of Bacon's advice was natural and generally accepted though he also offers experimental observations. Across the essays Bacon offers advice on herbs medicines food drink sleep exercise bathing hygiene climate blood letting and more.The subject of prolonging life was close to Bacon's heart - he saw this is one of the main objectives and highest goals of his new science.An early edition this work was first published in 1623. In a contemporary vellum binding. Externally binding is discoloured with some marks as is usual with a vellum binding. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the tail of the spine. Rear endpaper is adhered to the rear paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age-toned and generally clean with some spots. The first edition and the first publication of this work.Entirely in the original Latin.This work has been collated using the online copy available from Harvard University Libraries and is complete.Gibson 230a First edition first issue with the publisher's imprint being 'R Danielis'. This edition has the comma to line 8 of the title which Gibson only notes as being a variant for the second issue. However it would appear that the first issue has this comma also. This work comprises of several previously unpublished writings including a biography on Bacon by the editor William Rawley. The editor of this work William Rawley was Sir Francis Bacon's chaplain and literary executor. He preserved and oversaw the posthumous publication of many of Bacon's works. Rawley worked with many associates to preserve Bacon's memory through these posthumous publications.Several essays to this work include 'Historia Densi & Kari' 'Topica Inquisitionis de Luce & Lumine' 'Imago Civilis Julii Caesaris' 'Imago Civilis Augusi Caesaris' as well as several more.'Opuscula Sex Philosophica Simul Collecta' 'Opus Illustre in felicem memoriam Elizabethae Angliae Reginae' and 'confesso Fidei Anglicano Sermone Conscripta' all have separate dated title pages as called for.The essay on Queen Elizabeth's felicity was previously published in English in 1651. Here Bacon highlights his stance against duels which he deemed to be against the will of God. This work was published as a part of James I's anti-dueling campaign. Bacon's work was one of two major treatises published on this subject at the time. The campaign was prompted by a series of high profile combats between leading courtiers in late 1613. In October of 1613 James I issued a proclamation banning the publishing or writing of works on duels. He also made the offence punishable in Star Chamber to publicise any proceedings of duels. Henry Howard the Earl of Northampton lead the campaign initially and this then fell to Sir Francis Bacon the attorney general upon Northampton's death. This work is one of the major contributions to the Jacobean anti-dueling campaign. ESTC reference No: S121055. A disbound copy of this work which is closely trimmed to the head of the title. Collated lacking the initial and final blanks. Illustrated with woodcut head pieces and initials. Sir Francis Bacon was a leading intellectual figure of sixteenth and seventeenth century Britain.
