Laid-in is a letterpress poem from 1894: "Aunt Hannah at Rest" enclosed in an envelope addressed to Richard Bacon and bearing an ink stamp: "Insert in book ‘Aunt Hannah at Greenwich'".<br /> <br /> A remarkable no expense spared souvenir book prepared and printed in 1892 in honor of Hannah Wood Scull's 80th birthday celebration in 1889. It features 3 mounted woodburytype photographs the frontispiece photo of Hannah with Juliana Wood family members in front of Richard Wood's residence in Greenwich and silhouettes of Elizabeth and Richard Wood 2 engraved portraits mezzotint and steel and 5 gravure plates of four photos including the Greenwich Friend's Meeting House and one facsimile document. The book documents the Wood and Bacon families two prominent Quaker families from Greenwich New Jersey with close ties to Haverford College. It includes Richard Wood's "Address of Welcome" and other material relating to Hannah's birthday celebration along with Wood and Bacon family records and documents. Among the early documents is a letterpress transcription of "Samuel Bacon's Indyan Purchase" of 1683 "Shaukanum & Et-hoe Indyan proprietors of that parcel of Land called & knowne to the Indyan natives by the name of Ca-ta-nun-gut lyeing neare Chohanzey on Dellaware River for & in Consideration of two Coates of Duffelds three Blanketts two double handfuls of powder six barres of lead two shirts two knives two paire of Stockings two lookeing glasses two Combs two hoes two Axes two needles two Aules one Gunn one gildr in Wampon & two paire of Cicers to us in hand payed by Samuel Bacon Senior of Woodbridge in East Jersey yeom." A very scarce edition collecting together three of the works of Roger Bacon. In the original Latin.This volume includes his 'Opus Tertium' 'Opus Minus' and 'Compendium Philosophiae'.The first two works in this volume are summaries of and an introduction to Bacon's most famous work 'Opus Majus'. The treatise covered a range of scientific subjects including mathematics physics philosophy and logic. Bacon was request to write the work by Pope Clement IV.Illustrated with three colour folding plates and one colour plate to the frontispiece. Edited by J. S. Brewer a clergyman historian and scholar.A second volume was never published.Four pages of adverts to the front and eleven to the rear. In the original publisher's quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally generally smart with some light marks to the boards and spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is discoloured. Label residue to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Being a letter from Richard Noverre Bacon to the mayor of Norwich Henry Staniforth Patteson. Bound in contemporary paper wraps and held in a custom buckram clamshell box.With the bookplate of a local historian Ron Fiske. Fiske was an architectural surveyor who had a passion for local history. An article for the North Norfolk News refers to Fiske as a 'go-to-man for academics and researchers who wanted to know more about Norfolk's past'. He and his wife bought Morningthorpe Manor in the 1990s which became home to his vast historical library of over 30000 books and pamphlets. This work regards a proposal for a new porch to St Andrew's Hall Norwich. It is written to the mayor of Norwich Henry Staniforth Patteson by Richard Noverre Bacon an English newspaper editor. Bacon was a noted author on agriculture and was an editor of the Norwich Mercury. Bacon is against the proposal for a new porch and refers to it as 'inconsistent' and that it will 'destroy the design of this fine building'. The 1997 work 'Norwich and North-East The Buildings of England refers to a 19th century restoration where the south porch was moved from the next bay to the east. This pamphlet may well refer to this restoration. There are limited resources regarding this restoration. An interesting piece of local history. In later paper wraps. Externally very smart. Light marks to the wraps. Small hole to the rear wrap. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional scattered spots. Very Good Indeed Anon paperback

Good or so. <br /> <br /> The firm Russell Majors and Waddell contracted with the War Department in 1860 "for the transportation of military stores and supplies to the army then occupying Utah and New Mexico." War Secretary John Floyd soon to desert to the Confederacy accepted drafts drawn by the firm "thus solemnly acknowledging the indebtedness of the United States to the drawers for the amounts so accepted." Peirce and Bacon purchased these drafts and sought payment from the United States but the government has rebuffed them.
