It was the only work Bacon ever published in English."<BR> <br /> <BR> <br /> The second volume bound-in The Essayes or Covnsels Civill and Morall. 1639 has the title in a woodcut border. First published in 1597 this work is the enlarged edition and perhaps the most widely read work of Bacon. "Some of the essays deal with policy for princes and men in high position. A number however are written from the viewpoint of those seeking advancement in life. Bacon proffers concise advice and judgements on civil business situations conduct and the weighing of character and motives. This history was written in part to pacify James I by providing him with a "flattering portrait of his ancestor" though it also successfully conveyed an accurate depiction of "the man and the real business of his reign. The politician and natural philosopher Francis Bacon Viscount St. Alban 1561-1626 wrote The Historie of.King Henry in 1621 during the most turbulent period of his life. That same year he had fallen into public disgrace owing to his support of governmental patents and monopolies. Bacon's enemies in parliament impeached and prosecuted him for corruption although such claims were dubious. King James allowed the trial to continue despite Bacon's desperate pleas. During the trial Bacon promised to write a good history of England in appeasement to the King. The result was The Historie of.King Henry dedicated to Prince Charles. Marrku Peltonen writes of the work "It should be seen in the context of humanist historiography rather than as a precursor of its modern methods.The central lesson of The History of Henry VII was that a ruler must remain open to accident and ready to seize the opportunities it offered" ODNB. King Henry VII 1457-1509 seized the throne at the momentous 1485 Battle of Bosworth Field. This decisive battle effectively ended the War of the Roses and installed the Tudor monarchy. Francis Bacon was an English philosopher statesman scientist jurist and author. He is credited with creating empiricism a theory of knowledge based primarily on sensory experience. He established and popularized inductive methodologies for scientific inquiry often referred to as the Bacon method. He was elected to the English Parliament and served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor. In 1621 his public career ended in disgrace when he was charged with 23 separate counts of corruption though he remained extremely influencial through his philosophical works and as a practitioner of the scientific method after his death. Bacon's Essays the fruits of his political and social observations were first published in 1597 enlarged in 1612 and again in 1625. His long attempt to reform the intellectual habits of the European mind began with the publication of The Advancement of Learning in 1605 which attacked the unprofitable scholasticism that inhibited the growth of knowledge and the mental prejudices that helped to keep men in ignorance. Above all he deplored the poor and confused state of knowledge about the operations of the natural world. Novum Organum begun about 1608 published 1620 called for a systematic study of the natural world and of the causes of things and proposed the inductive method as the most reliable instruments of enquiry. Bacon worked out the principles of the experimental method in this book and developed them in De Augmentis 1623. Sylva Sylvarum a proposal of 1000 experiments to be undertaken was published posthumously in 1627 together with New Atlantis a Utopian fragment written about 1617 that urged the foundation of a college for scientific research. A short book that enjoyed much popularity in his lifetime was De Sapientia Veterum 1609 translated as The Wisdom of the Ancients 1619 which tried to demonstrate that the myths of the Greeks were coded accounts of their knowledge of the physical world."
